  2. With your pair partner, discuss the factors that would be considered in distinguishing normal behavior from abnormal behavior. Gearing UP:

Normal vs. Abnormal • Must define what is considered normal for that society/community/culture • Challenges: What if a behavior is the NORM, but is not considered right or morally acceptable? • Subjective conclusion • Adjustment • The ability to get along in the world – physically, emotionally, and socially • Mental Functionality • The ability to process information from the outside world in a logical way that is considered acceptable and allows others to interact with you fluently. What are psychological disorders?

Psychological illnesses are not simple to categorize as physical illnesses are • Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders or DSM (U.S. manual for psychological diagnosis) • Diagnostic Categories: • Essential features – characteristics that define the disorder • Associated features – additional features present • Differential diagnosis – how to distinguish the disorder from other disorders • Diagnostic criteria – list of symptoms that must be present for the patient to be properly diagnosed. Classification of Disorders

  5. There are SEVERAL categories of psychological disorders. Choose one category…THEN choose ONE specific disorder within that category. • Gather information about that disorder using your textbook, non-fiction library books, and/or reliable internet sources (i.e. websites ending in “.org”/“.edu”/ “.net”). Document ALL of your sources using APA reference formatting. See online resources to place your resources in proper APA format (i.e. www.citationmachine.com). ALL INFORMATION MUST BE PARAPHRASED. Plagiarism will result in a ZERO for this PROJECT GRADE. • Create a Prezi/PowerPoint on your chosen psychological disorder with the following items: • Identify and describe the category of Psychological Disorder to which this disorder belongs (5 pts) • List the symptoms of the chosen psychological disorder (5 pts) • Biological implications (what happens within the body when this disorder develops (in the brain, nervous system, endocrine system, etc.) (15 pts) • Psychological implications (what happens cognitively when this disorder develops (15 pts) • Social implications (how does this disorder hampers social interactions) (15 pts) • Therapy(ies) to deal/cope with the symptoms of this disorder (15 pts) • Reference Slide (last slide) in PROPER APA formatting (10 pts) • Title Slide (1st slide) with title, name, date, and class period (10 pts) • Inclusion of pictures, charts, graphs, and/or videos (10 pts) Project Instructions:
