  1. The Legend of Chopstick ChungA conceptual game design by David Yao Design Challenge To design a simple but wacky game that people of all ages can play for submission

  2. The Legend of Chopstick Chung Overview Genre: Action/Adventure Aesthetics: The desirable emotional responses evoked by the game dynamics. Chopstick Chung incorporates fantasy, narrative, challenge, discovery, and submission in terms of its aesthetic components

  3. User Description Audience: people of all ages, however potential players are novice gamers or non-gamers. Where: at home surfing the internet, in the office during break time (or not), lecture room

  4. Storyboard What’s this about? You are Chung, a high school drop out who loves skipping classes to go to Ramen Heaven for a fresh hot bowl of Pork Cutlet Ramen. Chung’s godly chopstick holding skills was discovered by the owner of the Ramen heaven during a match of killing flies with chopsticks against a stranger sitting in the same table as Chung. From then on Chung’s life undergoes a 360 degree turn as he enters the Golden Chopstick Association Cup (GCAC) and face many skilled opponents in different arenas of the world. Can you help Chung make it to the top?

  5. Prototyping

  6. Features/Functionality • Game System 3D model and environment without panning function (works like a 2D game), mouse (aim and shoot) oriented first person perspective • Aesthetics A story driven, fast paced adventure for submission, each level with more challenge and each arena with different opponent and fictional cultures. • Mechanics First person perspective with mouse-oriented (point and shoot) control, your tool/weapon/life-saver is your beloved pair of chopstick (upgradable with more speed and power)

  7. Justification of the Design • This is based on finger reflex games like the ギガ連射(Giga Rensya) series • This is based on strategy games like Carrie the Care Giver and Diner Dash Why? • Because you want something to do when you absolutely don’t want to get to your paper works in your little cubicle. Better yet, you want to feel like you’ve achieved something even when you’re slacking.

  8. User Testing

  9. Short Comings List problems of the design Most of the interactive objects in the game requires flying projectile physics and way finding (in cases where the object moves in random directions), a lot of research needs to be done List Risks Risk of being too cliché’ or cheesy with the presentation of graphics and textual contents. As a result the cliché overtakes the initial impression of the game being wacky and fun.

  10. Expansions As pointed out in the storyboard section, Chung goes and face many different opponents in different types of competitions. There’s endless possibilities for Chung to compete in. E.g. (The following are to be done using the chopstick) Fishing, Jedi-Sword fighting, Rock Climbing… etc.

  11. Next Steps • Build a survey for response on what would people like to see Chung compete in • Get programmers to consider feasibility of the game mechanics • Build a simple prototype (could be sprites with coding) • Iterate • Go through the design cycle again

  12. Summary The Legend of Chopstick Chung • Is an action/adventure game where players compete with chopsticks against AI through different obstacle challenges • Is wacky, simple, and most importantly, fun (fantasy, narrative, challenge, discovery, submission) • Expandable with endless possibilities • Needs programmers to confirm feasibility • Needs Artists to work out the conceptual models • Needs 3D animators to turn conceptual models into polygons
