  2. Uses of le Passé Composé • To talk about events that happened at a specific moment or that took place for a precise duration in the past. Je suisallé au concert vendredi. • To relate a sequence of events or tell about isolated actions. Tu as fait le lit et tu as sorti la poubelle.

  3. (P.C. cont.) • To indicate change in the mental, emotional or physical state of a person. Tout à coup, elle a eu soif. • To describe actions that move the plot forward in a narration. Nous avons passe une journee fantastuque a la plage. • To narrate facts in a story. Soudain, Thomas a trouvé la réponse à leur question.

  4. Uses of the imparfait • To talk about actions that lasted for an unspecified duration of time. Elle dormaittranquillement. • To relate events that occurred habitually in the past or tell how things used to be. Nous faisionsune promenade au parc tous les dimanches matins.

  5. (imparfait cont.) • To describe an ongoing mental emotional or physical state of a person. Elle avaittoujourssoif. • To describe the background scene and setting of a story. Il faisait beau et le cielétait bleu. • To describe people and things. C’étaitune photo d’unejoliefille.

  6. Savoir vs. Connaître

  8. Use savoir to say you know factual information. • Je sais tout surlui. (I know everything about him) • Voussavez qui estvenuhier? (Do you know who came yesterday?)

  9. Savoir may often be followed by que, qui, où, quand, comment, or pourquoi. • Nous savonsquetu arrives mardi. (We know that you are arriving Tuesday.) • Ilssavent comment allerà la gare. (They know how to get to the train station.)

  10. Use the verb savoir to say you know how to do something. • Il saitjouer au tennis. (He knows how to play tennis.) • Je sais jouer du piano. (I know how to play the piano.)

  11. Savoir in the past tense • L’imparfait: • Je savaisqu’ilallaitvenir. (I knew he was coming.) • Passé Composé – When used in the P.C., savoir implies to find out or to discover. • J’aisuqu’ilallaitvenir. (I found out [discovered] he was coming. )

  12. connaître – to know (person, place or thing) Je connais nous connaissons Tuconnaisvousconnaissez Il connaîtilsconnaissent P.C. with avoir J’aiconnu

  13. Use the verb connaître to say that you know, have a knowledge of, or are familiar with people • Mes parents ne connaissent pas monprof de maths. (My parents don’t know my math teacher.) • Tuconnais la fille qui vend l’appartement? (Do you know the girl who is selling the apartment?)

  14. Use the connaître to say that you know, have a knowledge of, or are familiar with places or things. • Jean connaîtcequartier de Rome. (Jean knows [is familiar with] this neighborhood of Rome.) • Je ne connais pas bien le cuisine morocaine. (I am not familiar with Moroccan cuisine.)

  15. Connaître in the past tense • Passé Composé Luca a connuElodie au lycée (Luca met Elodie in high school.) • L’imparfait Luca connaissaitElodie au lycée. (Luca knew Elodie in high school.)
