  1. Simple Machines A View From Around the Neighborhood

  2. Directions • As you go through the slides, there will be places to stop and visit. Click on the links and go through the activity. • When you are done with the activity, fill in your paper. Then return to the next slide by closing the window.

  3. Meet the Neighbors • You will be traveling through this virtual field trip to learn a bit about the six types of simple machines.

  4. The Neighbors: • Levers • Pulleys • Wheel and axle • Inclined plane • Wedge • Screw

  5. The Neighbors’ Background • At this first stop, you will see some examples of the six simple machines. • Click on each to get a definition. • Pay attention, there is an online quiz at the end. Don’t worry. You’ll do fine. • “http://www.coe.uh.edu/archive/science/science_lessons/scienceles1/finalhome.htm” • Be sure your paper is filled in for this section and then go onto the next slide.

  6. More Time with Pulleys, Levers and Wheel and Axle • Now that you’ve gotten an overview of each of the six simple machines, let’s spend a bit more time with them. • You’ll be locating three simple machines specifically.

  7. More Time with Pulleys, Levers and Wheel and Axle • At this stop, you will go through the town and locate pulleys, levers and wheel and axles in use. Follow directions and click on each that you see. • The colored dots will fill in so you know how many you still need to find. • Remember you can move around and up and down in the town.

  8. More Time with Pulleys, Levers and Wheel and Axle • Don’t forget to close out of the site to return here when you are done. • “http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/machines/simple_machines.htm” • Fill in your paper if you did not already and then go on to the next slide.

  9. Neighborhood Open House • Welcome to a typical house in the neighborhood. It could be your house. • Go through the rooms with your host and find all of the simple machines that are “hidden” in the home. • If you are feeling good about your progress and have a few extra minutes to spare, go visit the shed as well.

  10. Neighborhood Open House • Like our other stops before: 1. Click on the site 2. Fill out your paper 3. Close the site and come back here. http://www.edheads.org/activities/simple-machines

  11. The Advantage of Simple Machines • You’ve seen examples of the different simple machines, gotten a definition, found some alone and in combination with others. • Now it is time to try to get the best advantage from them.

  12. The Advantage of Simple Machines • In this next site, you’ll be helping complete a few tasks. • But more than that, you’ll be trying to complete the tasks using the least amount of effort. • This site is not so easy and you do get to try things a few times, so hang in there.

  13. The Advantage of Simple Machines • Go to the site and follow directions by starting at the introduction to help Pic and Harry. Do each item in the menu. • Fill out your paper. Come back here when you are done by closing the window. • http://sunshine.chpc.utah.edu/javalabs/java12/machine/index.htm

  14. Challenge Time • If you are ready for a challenge and you thought the last site was WAY too easy, travel back to ancient Egypt and help build a pyramid with the least effort. • If you are mentally exhausted by the last site, you may want to take a peak at the next one anyway.

  15. Challenge and Done • Challenge task: • http://scifiles.larc.nasa.gov/kids/Problem_Board/problems/pulleys/sim1.html • Now that you are done, write one last comment on your paper.
