  2. Outline the Principles • The social and cultural environment can influence behaviour. • We construct our concepts of the individual and social self • Human beings have a basic need to belong

  3. The social and cultural environment can influence behaviour. • Culture we are from and the society in which we live can influence our behaviour. • E.g. cultural dimensions • Individualism and collectivism • Time orientation

  4. We construct our concepts of the individual and social self • Social comparison process and SIT theory • SSB improves self-esteem which helps us to form our ideas of who we are. • Individualism and Collectivism

  5. Human beings have a basic need to belong • Humans are social animals, and as such we have a basic desire to belong to a social group. We follow social norms and obey the rules of our society so we are not ostracized (cast away from the group).
