SM 18 : Objectives • The objectives of SM18 Magnet tests facility is to : • Check the Electrical, Cryogenic, Quench performance of the LHC Cryo-magnets. • For good LHC accelerator performance and running-in, Field quality measurements must also be carried out. • 1706 number of cryogenic magnets that constitute the LHC ring must be tested at this facility. • To complete the Tests activity in time for LHC start up it was decided to implement 24 x 7 operation at SM18 in the middle of 2002.

Test Facility in SM18 • Fixed • 12 Test Benches arranged in pairs so, 6 clusters( A to F) • 6 Main Power Converters • 6 sets of Electronics for testing 1 per cluster • Mobile • For Q-location & MM we need to install Special 15 m Shafts • Shafts require Anticryostat mounting in magnets • Mobile Racks for HV insulation tests & Magnetic Measurements • Utilities • Water for 4 magnet powering at the same time • Cryogenics capacity and limits

Dealing with all constraints • Why ? • We need to update from many places ( In SMCR, on Floor level for HV tests etc..) • We need one centralized point to keep the data • We need statistics on all the magnet • We need to show on TV what test is going on SM 18 Hall SM 18 control Room Offices Status IT Web Server

Tools & Resources – Task Tracking System • With 12 benches in operation, the tests scenario in SM 18 is very dynamic. • In order to Help the Operators of our 3 Teams, a Web based Application has been developed: • The Task Tracking System: • Common Tasks List (To do List) for All Teams • Insure that Each Task is Completed (signed by operators) • Give Instant Production Status • Record each Completed Tasks • Database for Production Statistics

Work Flow: E-traveller • Description • The E-traveller is a software tool interfaced to mobile phones that alert the various teams that their services are required on a particular magnet. • Advantages • Time to locate members of other teams is reduced. • Reduced verbal communications between teams (Indian personnel have limited knowledge of French while Cryo & Mechanics teams are predominantly French speaking).

Power Cryo Water Work Tools : Integrated Resources Display & Priorities • Requirement • The operation team has to juggle with the resources to carry out the tests. • Description • This integrated resource display was generated by interacting with software programs controlling the resources and running under various operating systems. • Utility • This enables the operation crew to optimize the resources usage by setting the priorities and preventing resource conflicts from arising.

Operational Tools: SMTMS • Description • The SM 18 tests management system (SMTMS) uses the CERN backbone in the web based services and features of the ACCESS data base. • It provides: • Automatic generation of results summaries hence, reducing the ‘bureaucratic’ activity to a minimum after the tests are conducted on a magnet • Tracking the tests progress & tests statistics are important spin-offs of this tool.

  18. Web sites synchronization issues • At the beginning data input was done manually by operators in the web forms • Date Format problems • Wrong phase • File names with mistakes • Data depends on other teams • Soon we developed an automatic update system

Conclusions (1) • To improve operational efficiency and smoothen work flow, several operational tools were designed and implemented, • Many innovative ideas and proposals emerged from discussions held within the operation team, • Some tools have been developed by the ingenuity of operational personnel: • SM 18 Test Management System (SMTMS), • E-Traveller, • Integrated Resources Display.

Conclusions (2) • This project can be seen as web-mashing • A new concept where Software Programmers are combining data from different websites to create “mash-up” sites with entirely new capabilities (The Economist) • It was made as flexible as possible to cope with monthly modification • Automatic update and flexibility made the tools easy to use and to maintain • It eases the management of the facility by giving an overall view of the facility. With this tool you can easily have a view by magnet, by week, by test, … • Messaging system embedded in a web-based follow-up system can help the coordination of teams from different area of expertise
