    2. 5th Annual North Dakota Nature and Rural Tourism Conference January 16, 2007 - Fargodome Using the New Tools of Technology in your Tourism Business Geocaching -Tourism Treasure Hunt Presented by: Lance Brower and Carmen Rath-Wald NDSU Extension, Logan County

    3. The project started as… An Agriculture and Technology theme for an annual 4-H Overnight camp at Beaver Lake State Park to be held in August 2006. Exercises with Global Positioning System satellites and units Camp canceled Fire Danger to high We did not want to send back the grant What do we do? Lance and I brainstormed! All kinds of ideas.

    4. What we did… Came up with a plan to visit with an eighth grade Earth Science class at the Napoleon School to teach the kids about GPS technology and see where they would take it. Took the Technology Ag Mag into the classroom and had the kids answer a quiz we devised (see handout) Took GPS units into the classroom and had the students complete the Determining Speed side of the handout. The kids decided geocaching would be the way they wanted to go

    5. What is Geocaching? Geocaching is treasure hunting where GPS units are used to find cache containers. A world wide phenomenon, geocachers from around the world travel to discover hidden treasures. Once at a site, participants have the opportunity to learn about that community and contribute to the local economy.

    6. Brainstorm session #1 Items for the caches; what could they put in the trunks we purchased? Imperial Bracelets – Imperial is the school mascot Piggy Banks from the local banks Napoleon Brochure Sport Pictures Magnets Caps promoting area businesses Coupons – for example, a coupon good for a cup of coffee at a local café.

    10. Then What ?? Divided the class into 5 teams who named themselves and took on assignments: Science Geeks (Get items for the caches) Beaver Creek Tribe (Public Relations and Marketing) Extinguishers (Place geocache) Explorers (Place geocache) Fireflies (Place geocache)

    11. Oops!! Lance and his wife checked the GPS coordinates… One site outside of Kansas City…J Expert with the www.geocaching.com website validated the coordinates. Published in a geocaching newsletter emailed world wide Groundspeak Weekly Notification

    12. So how does it work? Geocachers access the website: www.geocaching.com Type in their travel stops to find caches along the way or type in a zip code for specific area caches. Use a GPS unit to find the coordinates and locate the cache.

    23. The students invited the local business association and other interested citizens to come and learn about their project The media gave great coverage with TV and newspaper stories explaining the project.

    25. North Dakota’s visitors can learn about the state’s culture and heritage in a new way; by getting out of their cars and tour buses and into fields, kitchens and canoes. Learning Based Vacations cater to groups or individuals looking to combine learning new skills with fun and adventure. Create your own customized learning-based vacation in a variety of areas such as agriculture, American Indian studies, art, birding, immigrant cultures of North Dakota, living history and paleontology. Geocaching will soon be listed on the tourism learning based vacations website for more North Dakota Adventure!
