What is Discrimination? • Discrimination is prohibited by six of the core international human rights documents. • Making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit. Indirect • The idea of indirect discrimination is that, if an act has a disproportionately disadvantageous impact on people belonging to certain types of social groups, then the act is morally wrong and legally prohibited if it cannot meet some standard of justification. Age • Age discrimination involves treating someone (an applicant or employee) less favorably because of his age. • The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) only forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older. Disability • Disability discrimination occurs when an employer or other entity covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, treats a qualified individual with a disability who is an employee or applicant unfavorably because she has a disability. Equal Pay • The Equal Pay Act requires that men and women in the same workplace be given equal pay for equal work. • If there is an inequality in wages between men and women, employers may not reduce the wages of either sex to equalize their pay. Religious • Religious discrimination involves treating a person unfavorably because of his or her religious beliefs. • The law protects not only people who belong to traditional, organized religions, but also others who have sincerely held religious, ethical or moral beliefs. • Religious discrimination can also involve treating someone differently because that person is associated with an individual of a particular religion or because of his or her connection with a religious organization. Japanese Internment Camps • During WWII, Japanese Americans were sent to live in internment camps. • They were under lock and key and had bad living conditions. • It was a anti- Japanese movement that sparked due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor from the Japanese.   27. The Holocaust • The Holocaust, during the 1940's was one of the biggest acts of discrimination. • Millions of innocent people were murdered because of discrimination. • If you were Jewish, homosexual, disabled, etc., you were not wanted and killed. • Imagine your family members or friends being taken away and maybe even killed just because they had brown eyes or brown hair.   28. Important People Who Have Made A Difference

  29. Martin Luther King, Jr. • He stood up against discrimination and helped create the Civil Rights Movement • He brought justice to African Americans and created equality for them. • Combated racial inequality through nonviolence

  30. Rosa Parks • She boycotted the bus system when she was discriminated against because of her race. • She brought together her African American Community and stood up for what is right. • She was arrested then quickly released for not listening to the bus driver when asked to move on the bus. • After her movement that she created, African Americans had free choice of where to sit on the bus. Cesar Chavez • When farmers weren't getting paid adequate wages for their hard work, Cesar Chavez boycotted grapes through a non violent protest. • He then created the Farm Workers Union to help support and fight discrimination of the farm workers.   32. Oskar Schindler • German industrialist who lived in the WWII time. • He saved nearly 1,500 Jews from being killed and labored • He kept them saved and worked under good conditions in one of his factory until the Polish soldiers came in.

  33. Abraham Lincoln • 16th president of United States of America • Successfully led the country through the American Civil War. • Strongly against slavery • Pushed through Congress the "13th Amendment" which freed all the black slaves nationwide

  34. How can we make a difference? • No matter what age, where you live, or what gender you are, you can make a difference. • Any time you see someone being treated unjustly, you can befriend them and be there for them. No one deserves to be an outcast because everyone is part of Gods family.

  35. Educate Others • Spread the word! • Many people don't realize how discrimination can affect people, or even what it is. If everyone is educated, discrimination can be a thing of the past.
