  1. Mathematics and Statistics Department Hāpaitiatearatika, pūmau ai te rangatiratanga mōngāuriwhakatipu Foster the pathway of knowledge to strength, independence and growth for future generations Year 11 Mathematics & Statistics – 2020

  2. Year 11 Mathematics & Statistics Courses – 2020 • Mathematics is compulsory in Year 11 • You mustchoose2 Mathematics & Statistics courses (one per semester) • There are 7 courses to choose from in Mathematics & Statistics, although entry into 11MAN will be decided by the Year 11 Tutor and the HOLA of Mathematics & Statistics • Those wishing to do Calculus in Years 12 & 13 must do 11MAL • Those wishing to do Statistics in Years 12 & 13 must do 11MSE • You cannot do both 11MGE and 11MGS due to overlap

  3. The 3 Pathways • Calculus: • The Calculus pathway is for students wishing to head towards fields such as Engineering, Architecture, Computer Science and any other studies related to Pure Mathematics. It is also helpful in Health Sciences. • Calculus partners well with Physics in the Science curriculum

  4. The 3 Pathways • Statistics: • The Statistics pathway is for students wishing towards fields where understanding data analysis is important. This includes: Health Sciences; Vetinary Science; Phsychology; Law; Commerce; Journalism; Political Science; Computer Science/Data Science • Statistics partners well with Biology and with the Social Sciences NB: It is becoming more common for students in Years 12 & 13 to take both Calculus and Statistics in order to get more breadth (especially those going into Health Sciences/Medicine)

  5. The 3 Pathways • General Mathematics: • The MAT201/MAT301 pathway is for students who are not wanting to pursue tertiary studies that require Mathematics or Statistics papers, but just want a bit of exposure to applications of Mathematics and Statistics

  6. Year 11 Mathematics & Statistics Semester Courses – 2020 11MAL – Modelling Mathematics using Algebraic techniques • Compulsory prerequisite for Calculus • Uses algebraic and graphical techniques 11MGE – Modelling Mathematics using Geometric techniques • Recommended for Calculus, but not compulsory • Uses trigonometry and transformation geometry techniques NB: Cannot do this course AND 11MGS

  7. Year 11 Mathematics & Statistics Semester Courses – 2020 11MSE – Modelling using Statistical Enquiry • Compulsory prerequisite for Statistics • Modelling situations using the Statistical Enquiry Cycle 11MSP – Modelling using Statistical Processes • Recommended for Statistics, but not compulsory • Developing an understanding of statistical modelling using probability and data analysis

  8. Year 11 Mathematics & Statistics Semester Courses – 2020 11MGS – Modelling Geometry using Shape • Open entry, but suitable for those wanting MAT201 • Using practical applications of shape, measurement and trigonometry NB: Cannot do this course AND 11MGE 11MGR – Modelling Geometry in Different Representations • Open entry, but suitable for those wanting MAT201 • Modelling design situations through practical applications of geometrical applications

  9. Year 11 Mathematics & Statistics Semester Courses – 2020 11MAN – Mathematics Numeracy • Students in this course will be recommended by teachers and need to be approved by Year 11 Tutor and the HOLA Mathematics & Statistics • This course is targeted at students intending to leave school by the end of Year 11 or who may struggle to get the Numeracy requirements of NCEA
