1. 15 minutes-- Welcome participants to the Diversity segment of New Employee Orientation Introduction of facilitator Introduction of participants: Have them look around the room. Ask: How many of you can identify 3 people you donít know? (Raise of Hands). Find 3 people you donít know and introduce yourself, telling your name and department. Iíll call you back in a few minutes. Facilitator note: (Loosens people up; gets them more comfortable with each other, more likely to participate) Background on NEO Diversity introduction: Why are we here? As valuing diversity is valued at NCSU, it was imperative that we include it as part of New Employee Orientation. Applications have increased 44% from 2003 to 2008 but are still averaging 0.6% of applicants Admissions rate is lower than others - 50% compared to 60% overall How are admissions decisions made? Graduate School Diversity Enhancement Grants Bridging Programs for Graduate Students Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity:Funded by NIH to recruit and retain graduate and undergraduate students majoring in biomedical, behavioral, and veterinary medicine.
