  1. Sensory Integration Gigantic Freeway System How do your senses fit together within your body? How does the brain get all the traffic to the right places? What happens if the roads get clogged? Great Photo 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  2. Five Basic SensesSight, Sound, Taste, Smell, Touch (MindMap by IQMatrix.com) • But, did you know there are three more? • Vestibular (balance) • Proprioceptive(body position) • Tactile (different from Touch) BalanceBody Position TactileWhy?Interventions

  3. Vestibular (Balance) • Balance and movement are all parts of the vestibular sense. Healthy vestibular sensory integrations are required for: • Chefs • Athletes • Race car drivers • Computer programmers • “Proper inner ear function is responsible for a good vestibular sense .” • True? • False? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  4. Proprioceptive(Body Position) • What is my body position? Where is my body? • Who has good proprioceptive sensing: • Acrobat? • Dancer? • Gymnast? • Michael Jordan? 5 SensesBalance Body PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  5. Tactile What is touching me, surrounding me? • Which would you like to be covered by: • Mud? • Shaving cream? • Warm sunshine? • Sand? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  6. Vestibular (Balance) Great! You got them right! Back to what you were doing: stand on one foot, close an eye, and keep your balance. Are you doing it? Wouldn’t you like to stop? Feeling comfy? What if it weren’t possible to “stop”? What if it just kept on going, and you always felt off balance? OK, stop. Did you like that feeling? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  7. Proprioceptive (Body Position) Yeah! You got them right. It was a trick question. Now, stand up, close both eyes, walk around where you are until you feel dislocated, lost. Don’t exactly know where you are, do you? Now you are feeling some sensory integration difficulties. Open your eyes. Feel better? But, what if that feeling didn’t go away? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  8. Tactile That was another trick question. You know you were set up, right? • What is something that you hate? • Now pretend you are in a big lake full of that stuff. Doing the back stroke. • How does it feel? Do you like this? • This is tactile sensing: “What is surrounding me and do I like that?” 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  9. So, how does Sensory Integration get messed up? Two experts will help us understand: • Dr. Kendal Stewart, NeuroSensoryCenters.com Viruses (takes 30 minutes) • Salman Khan, KhanAcademy.org Viruses (takes 17 minutes) Go to these two links above. Click “play”. Learn. Then, please, come back to this page. Want more about Kendal Stewart and Salman Khan? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  10. Why do things go wacky? Inflammation can occur because the immune system can’t handle all the pathogen load (kill off the bad guys). Inflammation in the brain is a very bad thing; it can shut down the body’s production of human growth hormone. The body stops growing. The brain starts going backward. Is this not terrifying, if you are watching it happen to your child? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  11. So, again, how does Sensory Integration get messed up? If an immune system can’t keep up, if the T-cells can’t adequately kill the pathogens, then they call in the B-cells. The B-cells bring inflammation, which is heat, water and swelling. The brain is an electrical machine. What happens when you bring water into an electrical machine? Nothing specialBig Problem 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  12. So, What Can You Do About This? • Help your child’s immune system to heal • Help your child to conquer these uncomfortable feelings through effective interventions: Occupational Therapy (OT) Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Purposeful Play, Floor Time Many other interventions are available. Here are the ones we have done. 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  13. Expert on Healing the Immune System Dr. Kendal Stewart Webinars (podcasts) on: • Neurotransmitters • Viruses • All Pathogens • More 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  14. Expert on Biology Salmon Khan of KhanAcademy.org Check out all his tutorials, especially: • Viruses • Bacteria • Immune System, Immune System • Helper T Cells, B Cells, Cytotoxic T Cells • Review • Inflammation • More 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  15. Expert on MindMaps IQMatrix.com They have many examples, and offer free downloads. They also feature Tony Buzan, the originator of MindMaps. Check it out! 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  16. WRONG! The early developmental years of a child are very important. If developmental delays occur, early intervention will give the child the best chance of healing and catching up. 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  17. Oops. Wrong Answer. Want to try again? Go Back 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  18. Sensory Integration Finally, to test what you have learned, when we are done, explain it to someone you love. If you can then explain it, you then know it. OK, tell me 5 facts about Sensory Integration? 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?Interventions

  19. Sensory Integration Never Give Up ! Never Give Up Hope ! You Can Do This ! 5 SensesBalanceBody PositionTactileWhy?InterventionsHome
