  16. The Purpose of the Program • Helped explain to the students what a drug trial is. • Added to the fun factor of the Science fair. • Aimed to get children interested in the pharmaceutical industry. • Gave a visual example of how statistics is used in the industry.

  17. The Program

  18. The ProgramThe Blue Pill • The program is a sample sizing exercise for a clinical trial with a pain drug. • Superiority study of active treatment against a placebo treatment. • Only end point is a difference between active and placebo on an 11 point pain scale. • The students had to decide the best value for the 3 parameters: • N • Cut off point • Probability

  19. The ProgramThe Red Pill • Once they are happy with their 3 parameters they entered the values into the clinical trial simulation. • This screen was put up onto the plasma screen. • They would find out here how successful their study had been in the clinical trial.

  20. How It Happened The Fair The Program Our Views and What Was Gained Questions

  21. Our Views and What Was GainedPositives The Program+Successfully got students interested in the pharmaceutical industry. The Fair+ The fair attracted people of all ages • Primary School pupils • GCSE / A Level students • University Students • Teachers • Parents +Spoke to members of the public about our experience at Roche PSI+It was highly valuable for PSI to have presence at such a big national event+We had the opportunity to meet other statisticians within the industry

  22. Our Views and What Was GainedSuggestions for improvement The Program -The program was great for the older students but was a bit too advanced for the younger children. +We couldreview the program and simplify it where possible Panel discussion - 3 of the 6 representatives on the panel were Engineers. -Limited discussion about careers in Maths, no mention of Statistics. + Potential for a statistician to sit on the panel for future events
