  2. All of the body parts responsible for helping you breathe make up the Respiratory System.

  3. Functions of the Respiratory System: • Taking in oxygen • Delivering oxygen to the body and cells • & Getting rid of carbon dioxide

  4. Oxygen is what you breathe in. It is necessary for life and to burn nutrients!

  5. The respiratory system warms and cleans the air as it enters the body and moves through the organs.

  6. Major parts and organs: • Nasal passages • Trachea • Lungs

  7. Most important muscle: Diaphragm!

  8. Healthy Respiratory System • Avoid tobacco smoke • Avoid air pollutants • Exercise regularly

  9. List 3 major parts of the respiratory system. • What is the purpose of the respiratory system? • How can you have a healthy respiratory system?

  11. Functions: • Keeps body warm/cool • Protects against germs • Prevents water from leaving • Sends messages to the brain

  12. Caring for skin: • Regular washing • Protection from injury and the sun • Getting enough rest • Eating healthy foods • Drinking a lot of water

  13. Avoiding too much sun exposure is especially important!

  14. Bad sunburns during childhood greatly increase your chances of skin cancer as an adult

  15. Skin cancer is the uncontrolled growth of bad cells. It is caused by UV rays from the sun!

  16. Skin cancer can be deadly if it is not treated!

  18. If you get sun burned, you should: • Take a cool bath • Moisturize skin with lotion or aloe vera plant • Protect skin from further sun damage if you go outside, cover up • Wear loose clothing

  20. Protection: • Stay in the shade • Avoid middle-of-the-day sun (12-3) • Wear protective clothing • Use hats, umbrellas, or anything that can block the sun
