  2. WHAT IS AN ADJECTIVE? • An adjective is a word that describes/modifies a noun or pronoun EXAMPLES: • A big, red ball • The cute, huggable puppy • The tall, green tree • His huge, sharp teeth

  3. WHAT IS AN ADVERB? • Adverbs describe/modify verbs. EXAMPLES: • Jose was quietly going out the door. • Glendale was torn down slowly. • Tonyspoke slowly. • Katie jumped high.

  4. An adverb tells us when,where,and how about verbs, adjectives and even other adverbs An adjective describes a noun or pronoun by telling which one, what kind or how many JUST EXACTLY WHAT DOES AN ADJECTIVE AND ADVERB DO?

  5. Examples of adjectives and the nouns/pronouns they modify. Yellow describes the sweater. She wore a yellow sweater to the picnic. adjective noun Messy describes the bedroom. My bedroom was messy. noun adjective Blue and white describe the color of the parka She lost her blue and white parka. adjective adjective noun

  6. Examples of adverbs and what they do: Extremely describes how grumpy David was. David was extremely grumpy. Easily describes how the runner finished the race. The runner easily finished first. Jose, my oldest brother, drove slowly by his girlfriend’s house. Slowly describes how the brother drove the car.

  7. Adverbs and Adjectives • In your hyperbole paragraph, use five adjectives and five adverbs. Circle all adjectives in red, and circle all adverbs in blue.
