  2. Review of “In the beginning: God” • Started where Scripture started. • God is incomprehensible yet knowable • God’s attributes • Infinite qualities • Personal / moral qualities • How it all works in balance • Things God can’t do. • Trinity: “God” is inclusive of his personalities and qualities. • WIIFM –(example: if God is everywhere then it’s both reassuring and convicting)

  3. THE WORK OF REDEMPTION Discipleship Ministry The Living Word Christian Fellowship

  4. LESSON OUTLINE • GOD’S WILL/ PLAN/ EXPECTATIONS • SIN • THE LAW • HOW THE LAW LEADS TO GOD? • JESUS WAS THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW • WHY JESUS? • WHY GRACE?

  5. REDMEPTION re·deemPronunciation Key  (r -d m )tr.v.re·deemed,re·deem·ing,re·deems • To recover ownership of by paying a specified sum. • To pay off (a promissory note, for example). • To turn in (coupons, for example) and receive something in exchange. • To fulfill (a pledge, for example). • To convert into cash: redeem stocks. • To set free; rescue or ransom. • “redemption” vs. “salvation”. • What are we saved from? • Why are we redeemed?

  6. THE TRINITY IN THE WORK OF REDEMPTION • Always working together. • Father is the Initial Cause. • Son is the mediating cause. • Sprit completes the work. • The work of Redemption • The Father Desires all men to be saved. (2Peter 3:9) • The Son was sent to be the ultimate sacrifice, so that all men may be saved. (John 3:16) • The Spirit: • Prepared a body for Jesus, through the impregnation of the virgin Mary. • Convicts People to come to Christ (since nothing in men’s sinful heart will attract him to God)

  7. GOD DESIRES FOR MAN • VERY IMPORTANT: GOD MAD MADE MAN FOR HIS PLEASURE. • He didn’t need man (unlike a “monad”.) • He foresaw what God will do. • To commune with Man(& women) in eternity. (Genesis Chapter 2-3) *But God knew that man was going to sin. • For man to be holy just as HE is holy.(Lev 20:26) *But God knew that man was going to sin.

  8. GOD’S DESIRE FOR MAN (cont.) • In the end, his plan is still fulfilled. (Ephesians 1:4) • Man is able to be with God for eternity. • Man is still able to be holy. • Both are accomplished in Christ • k

  9. SIN • ARCHARY TERM that means “missing the Mark”. • SIN IS DISOBEDIENCE OF GOD’S LAW. • Sin of commission- things you weren’t supposed to do, but still did. (thou shall not) • Sin of omission-things you were supposed to do, but didn’t do. (thou shall) • (examples) • ENTERED THE LIVES OF MEN THOUGH ADAM –Romans 5:12 • From then it infected us like a disease. • Death crept in (the wages of sin is death) • And we’ve been passing it down ever since. • B

  10. SIN ACCOMPLISHES TWO THINGS: • GUILT • Subjective (different effects) • Can be Suppressed • PUNISHMENT • Cause & Effect. (Natural Law) • Spiritual death: Sin separates Man from God. • I am the way the truth and LIFE…. • Sin separates us from God • Physically alive but spiritually dead--- Valley of Dry Bones. • Eternal Death: The end result of Spiritual death. Basically hell.

  11. SIN AND THE LAW • The Law was designed to bring lead us God, but not in the obvious way (to do good and please God.) • The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.(1 Cor15:56) • Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. (Rom 3:20) • The Law made us aware of sin. (Romans 7:7) • Because law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. (Rom 4:15) • Even worse- If you break one commandment you broke it all (James 2:10) • *the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil Law= knowing what is right and wrong.

  12. THE LAW LEADS US TO GOD • If this is all true How does the Law lead us to God? • You realize that you cannot make it on your own. • Your Good is not good enough. • You need a bridge to get you across this wide separation. • You need a savior. • GOD SENT HIS SON.

  13. THE NEED • THERE IS SIN • THERE IS LAW (THAT DOESN’T MAKE ANYONE RIGHTEOUS) • THERE IS PUNISHMENT • THERE IS THE INABILITY OF MAN • THERE IS A NEED FOR A SAVIOR.

  14. GOD PROVIDES A WAY • “ For onto us a child is born, unto us a son is given”. (Isaiah 9:6) • Doesn’t mean the same thing. • The Physical Jesus was born… • The son (God the Sod) has always existed- John 1:1 • JOHN 3:16- For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son…(you know the rest). • s

  15. OLD TESTAMENT LAW • 2 Main ideas that keep popping up. • PRIEST AND PROPHETS (Number 3) • SINFUL MAN COULDN’T GO STRAIGHT TO HOLY GOD • BRIDGES OVER THE GAP OF SIN • SACRIFICE (Leviticus) • HOLY GOD CAN’T TOLERATE SIN SOMETHING MUST DIE. • SUBSTITUTE: Symbolized death for the sinner. • HAD REQUIREMENTS • CLEAN / SANCTIFIED • NO DEFORMATIES • MALE • LAYING OF HANDS

  16. JESUS AND THE LAW • Read Hebrews 7:23-28 / 10:11-14 • Because he lives forever, he is a priest forever. • Because he was a perfect man, he was a perfect sacrifice…. (LAMB OF GOD) • God designed a flawless introduction of a savior into the world of man. *Just as through one man sin entered the world, also through one man all are saved.(Rom 5:18-19) • The relationship of Jesus & the (old) Law. • The (old) Law was only designed to lead us to Christ. (Galatians 3:24-25) • ; • Jesus fulfilled the Law. * (I did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. Matthew 5:17)

  17. GENIUS OF GOD WITH THE LAW • God introduced the Laws in the past • So that the transition was seamless. • Couldn’t be a seen as a new idea. • God shows he is in control. • He stayed within his own laws. (omniscience) • Power- he can move things around like that. • Knows the past /present /future. • God does not change his mind/plans ..otherwise he is: • Unpredictable • He doesn’t know • This shows that God planned it all along. (1pet 1:19-21)

  18. IN CHRIST ALONE • Acts 4:12Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” • One Mediator… 1Tim 2:5 • He is the only one who could/have fulfilled both requirements. • Because has eternal he is a priest forever • Because he was man, his death was a sufficient sacrifice for our sins. • This exclusivity offends others (will cover later)

  19. GRACE- gaining something you don’t deserve • Saved by grace and not by works so that no man can boast (Eph 2:9) • No way to accomplish our own righteousness (Isaiah 64:6) • The Law was not designed to make one righteous. • Breaking one law means you broke them all. (James 2:10) • Everyone has broken it. (Romans 3:23) • It wasn’t by our own efforts or goodness are we able to get to God.

  20. KINSMAN REDEEMER • Selling of the Land (Leviticus 25:23-25) • God gave them land. • If they became poor and had to sell it: • It cannot be sold permanently. • If the owner can’t buy it back, a relative can buy it back and preserve its original ownership. • Ruth & Boaz (Book of Ruth) • Husband died and had to sell the land • Boaz was a close relative and was able to return the land back to the family • Jesus: the Kinsmen redeemer. • God owned us. • We became separated by sin. • Jesus bought us back by his blood.

  21. SUMMARY • God knew before hand that man will sin because of freewill. He already had a plan. • God still made man for his purpose. • When Adam sinned, God set his plan in action. • He introduced the foundation early in the Law. • The same Law • Lead men to God by exposing sin. • Made the intro of the savior to be a familiar concept. • The savior fulfilled both requirements • Priest • Sacrifice • Jesus is the only one that done that. • Only Mediator between God and Man • Only name that men might be saved • d

  22. GOD’S ORIGINAL PLAN is still fulfilled. • THE PLAN • To commune with Man(& women) in eternity. • For man to be holy just as HE is holy. • In the end, his plan is still fulfilled. (Ephesians 1:4) • Man is able to be with God for eternity. • Man is still able to be holy. • Both are accomplished in Christ • In the end we were brought back to God. * We are redeemed!

  23. WIIFM • Whatever god plans he fulfills. • it causes me to lean on God more, realizing that I cannot be good on my own. • God wants me to be with him for eternity. • He loves me so much that he gave his son.
