  1. Digestive System Respiratory System • Digestive system • Respiratory system • Circulatory system • Musculoskeletal system Human Body Systems Pretest/Intro (Put in Lab Notebook) Divide your paper into quadrants and label each accordingly. Under each system heading, 1) identify the organs (parts) belonging to the system, and 2) briefly describe the function of each organ. Musculoskeletal System Circulatory System Example

  2. Human Body Systems Lesson 2: Warm Up (Discuss with your table members, choose a spokesperson, and prepare an answer to share with the class.) How do you think food moves through the digestive tract? What do you think happens to food as it moves through the digestive tract? Why do you think the digestive tract gets narrower at some places?

  3. Human Body Systems Lesson 2: Conclusion/Review Mechanical digestion includes the tearing and grinding action of the teeth, mixing and mashing of the tongue, churning of food by the muscles lining the digestive tract, and the breaking down of large fat droplets into smaller ones through the action of the bile. Chemical digestion serves the purpose of breaking down the chemical bonds in nutrients so they can be absorbed into the bloodstream. This is accomplished by digestive enzymes. Peristalsis is the wavelike motion the digestive muscles perform in order to break down food particles into smaller pieces and to move them along the digestive tract. Sphincters are the rings of thickened muscles that facilitate the passage of food from one area to another. They usually ensure that food continues to move in one direction. Mucus is the slippery secretion that coats the inner walls of the digestive tract to facilitate movement and offer protection.

  4. Digestion: Many animals don’t chew their food. They swallow their prey whole and depend largely upon chemical digestion to break down the food.

  5. Digestion: Sometimes animals may ‘bite off more than they can chew’!

  6. Exploring Carbohydrates: Review Carbs are one of the three major food groups. Sugars and starches are forms of carbohydrates. Carbs are a major source of energy for the body. Sugars occur in the form of monosaccharides (glucose, fructose, galactose) and disaccharides (maltose, sucrose, lactose). Starches, also known as polysaccharides, are long chains of sugars that are chemically bonded. They are found in high concentrations in legumes, grains, and root vegetables.
