  1. The Semester that Will Not Go Away • Your assignment is to emulate the style of any writer from any of the first literary periods that we have studied. • The content should be original—it is only the style of the writer that you are imitating.

  2. EXAMPLES • Rewrite a Puritan writer by creating your own journal of discovery. Maybe you will look for answers from pop culture, a special and brilliant teacher, or the internet. Be creative and have fun.

  3. I sat much alone with a poor, red-stained essay in my hand, which called out failure to me night and day, having nothing to correct the grammar, or change the ideas, but instead of that, sometimes one would come and tell me one hour, that kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably—the lesson is, never try, and then a second, and then a third, I hope this has taught you kids a lesson: kids never learn. This was the comfort I had from them, miserable comforters . . . d’oh, as he said.

  4. EXAMPLES • Rewrite a Rationalist writer by creating a speech or a declaration about an issue that is important to you. Politics, school, controversial issues, anything that is important to you.

  5. When, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one overlooked group of humanity to assume the equal rights that others connected with them have long held, and to assume among the powers of the earth the equal rights to which the laws of nature and the laws of our country entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of the majority requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to such demands. We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all races, creeds, and colors or men and women are created equal: that they have been endowed by the creators of this country with inherent and inalienable rights; . . .

  6. EXAMPLES • Rewrite a Romantic writer by creating a, dare I say it, poem similar to one written by a Romantic poet. Can you pull off teen poetry that focuses on nature and transcendence?

  7. To him who in the love of Nature holds Alright, you got the picture! What, did you think I was going to write some sappy poem!
