  2. 2 Summary of Key Messages Dear 2011 Challengers Just a few weeks to go now so it’s time to provide you with all the information you need to enjoy your weekend. I appreciate you live very busy lives, but please find time to go through the pack so you know exactly what is required of you. On the next page I have highlighted the “essential reading” elements of this pack – please pay particular attention to these. On May 17th there is a teleconference organised to share tips and hints to enable you to get the most out of the weekend and to answer any questions you may have - we encourage you to attend. On both challenges the safety of our members will be our greatest priority, so please listen and respond to our organising team on the day. We also ask you to take responsibility for your own safety and listen to what your body is telling you too – if your body is saying enough is enough, then pull-out (please don’t put yourself and others at risk). Hopefully you will all make it to the end of your challenge on time and in one piece, enabling you to experience that unbelievable feeling of success and achievement. Then in the evening we can share this success, swap stories and top it all by announcing the money we have collectively raised towards the purchase of a Breast Cancer Scanner for Poole Hospital. Please remember to let Ian Alexander know what you have raised a week before the event as you will be asked for this prior to the dogs dinner so we can calculate and announce our bigger team achievement. As ever, myself and my good friends on the brown dog Trustee Board can’t wait for the big event and we really look forward to catching up with old friends and meeting our new members. If you have any questions or concerns please contact me (or one of the Trustees – contact numbers on page 36) Mark On behalf of the brown dog Trustees/Organising Team

  17. 17 The Triassic Challenge Note: More detailed maps are attached at the back of the pack Stage 1 (10 miles) Stage 2 (15 miles) Stage 3 (14 miles) Stage 4 (11 miles)

  18. 18 Triassic Time Plan The first phase is probably the hardest with many steep ascents and descents. However we will be fresh, so the plan is to complete this at a good pace. The beauty and spectacular sights along this phase are there to be enjoyed, including the masses of wild flowers on top of the red cliffs at Branscombe, the extraordinary change in geology around Beer and keep a look out for the occasional peregrine. Soon after Seaton we will descend into the dense woodland of the Undercliff National Nature Reserve where you will be enclosed for some hours with only occasional glimpses of the sea. After emerging into open fields, the Path enters the county of Dorset at Lyme Regis where you will enjoy your first longer rest at the beautiful harbour. As the night draws in we continue inland slightly before dropping back to the sea at Charmouth and then up the spectacular Golden Cap (albeit in the dark) to Seatown . From Seatown we continue walking in the dark with some short, steep climbs before easing as it becomes more level at Burton Bradstock. At Burton we should start to see the dawn breaking as we pick up the long pebbly sweep of Chesil Beach. From here on in the walk is flat. The South West Coast Path climbs inland slightly from the historic village of Abbotsbury, passing woodland and open, rolling fields until dropping to follow the West Dorset Heritage Coast along the shores of the Fleet Lagoon to Ferry Bridge. This section of the Jurassic Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the views of Chesil Beach and the Fleet are truly unique. Continue on a peaceful walk along the edge of the Fleet until you reach the Haven Fleet entrance www.southwestcoastpath.com

  19. 19 Rules PACE SAFETY/HEALTH Remember we have to walk 50 miles AND complete the challenge in 23 hours – we must finish the challenge in this time-frame to achieve our goal If an individual is really holding up the group (on a continuous basis) and putting time-scales at high risk, the organisers may ask the individual to (i) get into a ground support vehicle to be taken to the next convenient stop or (ii) step down altogether Safety on the challenge is the main priority of the brown dog organising team If an individual has an injury or is in obvious distress and the organisers believe the individual is putting either themselves or others at risk they may ask the individual to step down. STAYING TOGETHER BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF For safety/support reasons it is important that we all stay together, plus this is a team event. Please can we ask that all challengers follow the challenge leader – stop when the leader calls a break, start when the leader says resume Note: Fitter challenges are requested to be supportive and patient of those who may find the challenge much harder Your health and safety is the most important thing on the challenge The organisers ask you to be honest with yourself and pull out of the challenge at any point if your health is at risk – put your health first please! Note: If you are struggling, talk to one of the organisers who are there to help you (Lime Green Shirts)

  20. 20 Ground Support Triassic Team (2 cars) Portland Team (1 car) • The Ground Support team are volunteers who have given up their time • to support you on the challenge. • This support will include; • Carrying additional water • Carrying a limited number of bags • Facilitating hot refreshment breaks • Facilitating a continental breakfast • Providing transport in case of emergency • Carrying and applying first aid • On this years challenge Ground Support access to the challenge route is excellent – so hopefully you will see their friendly and encouraging faces along the journey

  21. 21 At the end of the Challenge (and afterwards) The end of the challenge will be the (coast facing) entrance to the Haven Holiday Park. The Ground Support team will be there to congratulate you. We would like members who are near the front of the pack to wait for the whole team to come in – hopefully by the time the tail enders come in the sound of 70 people clapping should be enough encouragement to take those final steps. Once you reach the finish line try and find your friends/family who you are sharing a caravan with – one of them (could be you) will be given your caravan keys and told where it is. Make your way to your caravan, put your feet up and enjoy about 5 hours (hopefully)of sleep. Set your alarm to get you up in time to get ready for the Dogs Dinner.

  38. Additional Information We have added some additional information on the next few pages should you be interested

  39. 39 Triassic Stage 1 Sidmouth to Seaton Length: 10 miles (16km) Grading: Severe to strenuous Height gained (and also lost): 2110ft (643 metres) Summary: Walking through the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is impressive at any time of year and in any weather conditions. There are some especially beautiful stretches here and so the many steep ascents and descents are certainly well worth the effort. Leave the red cliffs of Sidmouth as you set off along this rugged section of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, crossing 200 million year old rocks. The red Triassic earth gives way to striking white chalk around Beer before you arrive at the mouth of the River Axe and the rich red cliffs of the village of Seaton

  40. Triassic - Stage 2 40 Seaton to Seatown Length: 15 miles (23km) Grading: Moderate Height gained (and also lost): 3398.6ft(1036m) Summary: A walk of contrast awaits as you leave the town of Seaton behind and embark on a journey along the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site through rich vegetation, over wild, crumbling cliffs and through pretty seaside settlements. The Coast Path descends into the dense woodland of the Undercliff National Nature Reserve, which has some uneven terrain in parts. You will be enclosed for some hours with only occasional glimpses of the sea, but there is still plenty to look out for. After emerging into open fields, the Path enters the county of Dorset at Lyme Regis where you will find an attractive harbour, interesting shops and refreshments. Continue inland slightly before dropping back to the sea at Charmouth where you pick up the Monarch’s Way along the cliff top and over the spectacular Golden Cap to Seatown.

  41. 41 Triassic - Stage 2 (diversion after Lyme Regis)

  42. Triassic - Stage 3 42 Seatown to Abbotsbury Length: 12 miles (20km) Grading: Moderate Height gained (and also lost): 1264ft(358m) Summary: A walk along a spectacularly dramatic section of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site awaits as you set off from the little village of Seatown. The Coast Path begins with some short, steep climbs before easing as it becomes more level beyond Burton Bradstock. After resting to enjoy the magnificent views and keeping a look out for peregrines from Burton Cliff, continue as the Path drops to pick up the spectacular, long pebbly sweep of Chesil Beach. It is no wonder that this truly breathtaking place is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and it is especially beautiful in the spring and summer months when there are many colourful flowers to enjoy. The hundreds of mute swans of Abbotsbury Swannery make for an extraordinary sight at the end of your day and there is a small selection of welcome refreshments in the fascinating, historic village of Abbotsbury.

  43. Triassic - Stage 4 43 Section: Abbotsbury to Haven Holiday Park Length: 11 miles (17km) Grading: Easy Height gained (and also lost): 922ft (281m) Summary: The South West Coast Path climbs inland slightly from the historic village of Abbotsbury, passing woodland and open, rolling fields until dropping to follow the West Dorset Heritage Coast along the shores of the Fleet Lagoon to Ferry Bridge. This section of the Jurassic Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the views of Chesil Beach and the Fleet are truly unique. Continue on a peaceful walk along the edge of the Fleet until you reach the entrance to the Haven Holiday park.
