2. Nouns • A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea • A singular noun names one person, place, thing, or idea • A plural noun names more than one person, place, thing, or idea

3. Nouns • Plural Nouns are usually formed by adding –s or –es to the singular noun Example: • Singular: student bench hotel truth • Plural: students benches hotels truths

4. Nouns • A proper noun names a specific person, place, thing, or idea • A common noun names any person, place thing or idea Example: Proper: Mrs. Reed Sears Tower Canada Common: teacher building country

5. Nouns • An abstract noun names an idea, quality, or a characteristic Example: peace, health, strength, contentment

6. Nouns • A concrete noun names an object that occupies space or that can be recognized by any of the senses Example: leaf, melody, desk, aroma

7. Nouns • A collective noun names a group. • When the collective noun refers to the group as a whole, it is singular. • When it refers to the individual group members, the collective is plural.

8. Nouns Collective Nouns Example: The family eats dinner together every night. (singular) The council vote as they wish on the pay increase. (plural)

9. Nouns • Compound Noun: consists of two or more words used together as a single unit - one word (baseball, caregiver) - separate words (school bus) - hyphenated (self-confidence, president- elect)
