  1. It is Pursuit of Happiness Week Tuesday, November 13th New seats—don’t get too comfortable! Grab a yellow book and open to 474. Get out your “Fall of the House of Usher” packet from yesterday along with your notebook.

  2. Find a place in your notebook to make notes. Draw a chart like so I will show you the opening scenes to two well-known horror films. Just watch. After each opening scene is over, I’d like you to write down every single thing that comes to mind in each column. Poe’s ultimate goal in his writing was to create the “singular effect,” i.e. every single thing in the story is working toward creating a unifying atmosphere or mood. The opening of “The Fall of the House of Usher” does just that.
