Why a GPS System?…more on safety • In an emergency the exact position of a bus can be relayed to first responders, reducing response time • During inclement weather, drivers can be given specific warnings and advisories • Lost buses can easily be guided back on route • Buses can be guided around major accidents or police situations • In the event a bus breaks down, other buses can quickly and efficiently be routed to remove any remaining students and transport them to their destination M

Why a GPS System?…more on management • By using the history function, management can monitor the path traveled by each bus which in turn allows for a review of the run to verify that the actual route traveled is not only safe and appropriate, but matches the designed route • The system allows for monitoring of employee compliance with procedures such as railroad crossings, stop times, layover location and times • By having actual confirmation of when a route ends, a comparison of hours claimed on timesheets may be made • Actual speeds traveled can be measured against not only legal limits, but also against minimum speed expectations to identify instances where drivers slow down excessively to claim more time M

  13. Digital Map Display • The system uses Microsoft Map Point as its map data and display system. • Anyone familiar with Microsoft Streets and Trips would immediately recognize this map, as well as most of the system controls. R

  14. GPS FeaturesHistory Tracking • The system can display the entire route a vehicle has traveled within a definable time-line. • The server stores one year of data per vehicle. R

Future Enhancements • Addition of bar-code scanning units to track student utilization of transportation services • This is a major enhancement to administrative efficiency due to the elimination of daily attendance sheets that take the equivalent of four months for one staff person to process • Allows for “real-time” tracking of students • Implementation of web-based access for parents to see when the bus is near arrival M
