  2. Saki • 1870-1916 • H. H. Munro, adopted the name Saki. • Born in Alyab, Burma • Mother died at 2, sent to live with relatives in England. • When WWI broke out, Munro enlisted at age 43 as a private in the British Army. • 1915, he went to France and was killed by a German sniper within a year.

  3. Vocabulary • Quarry – n. animal chased in a hunt; prey • Wont - adj. accustomed • Plight – n. condition or situation, usually bad. • Jest – n. something said to cause laughter, joke. • Compact – n. agreement or contract.

  5. Conflict Internal conflict vs. external conflict • Internal conflict occurs within a character who experiences opposing ideas or feelings • External conflict occurs between characters or between a character and a force of nature

  6. The Carpathians • The Carpathian Mountains begin in the Czech Republic and extend 930 miles through Slovakia, Poland, Ukraine, and Romania.

What happens when these two armed enemies come face to face in the woods on a winter night? • The cause of the feud: • A lawsuit over a narrow strip of land is the cause for the feud • There is a personal hatred between the two men which keeps the feud going • Is this an internal or an external conflict?
