  3. Setting • Be able to identify prepositional phrases in the opening paragraph of the short story • Be able to identify the location of the short story • Be able to explain how the setting contributes to the conflict of the short story

  4. Characterization • Identify the Point of View (Narration) • Distinguish between direct/indirect characterization from the author and the characters. • Are the main characters dynamic or static? • Are the qualities you find out flat or round?

  5. Conflict/Theme • What types of conflict are evident in this short story? • How does conflict contribute to the theme of the story? • What are the “Big Ideas”/ Themes of this short story?

  6. Feud • Be able to discuss the implications of a feud and the possible lessons learned from our study of “The Interlopers,” The Hatfields and McCoys, and “The Mending Wall.”
