  2. New stuff for 2nd semester: • Warm ups • Will not be turned in; grade in class; 10% final grade; points deducted for talking/not doing it/being off-task • Quicky quizzes • Every class period; worth 5 – 10 pts; drop 2 lowest scores; if absent, counts as dropped score • Late homework • Name on door for a week; if not crossed off, mandatory tutorials (call home) • Homework quizzes • Worth 10 pts.; can use homework; cannot drop or make up; if absent, grade homework as quiz

  3. Example #1: • Bill and his brother collect comic books. Bill currently has 15 books and adds 2 books to his collection every month. His brother currently has 7 books and adds 4 books to his collection every month. Write 2 equations and use them to find the number of months (x) after which Bill and his brother will have the same number (y) of comic books in their collections.

  4. Equations • y = 2x + 15 (Bill) • y = 4x + 7 (brother)

  5. Vocabulary • System of linear equations (linear system): two or more linear equations in the same variables • Solution of a linear system: an ordered pair that satisfies each equation in the system

  6. Solve by substitution • y = 3x + 2 • x + 2y = 11

  7. Quicky Quiz • 5 minutes • Worth 5 points • No notes allowed

  8. HW 3.1 Solving Systems by Substitution • Pgs 439 – 441: 5, 10, 14, 16, 21, 26, 28, 30, 32, 36
