  12. Student Wellbeing • Recognising Stress: • Changes in behaviour • Working too much/too little • Emotional • Over-reacting • Down/depressed

  13. What is stress? • Stress is one of the body’s natural responses to something that is threatening or frightening. • It is something that we all experience from time to time. • Stress is not necessarily harmful: mild forms can motivate and energise. • However, if your child’s stress level is too high then it can cause difficulties, including hindering their ability to prepare for and perform during their exams.

  14. Strategies/Tick list • Balanced diet – stock the fridge and cupboard with healthy options like protein bars instead of chocolate. • Encourage them to grab one of these for breakfast on the way to school/at break instead of using up their break to queue for food • Remove electronic devices at night and ensure a reasonable bed time (11 at the latest) so they have energy for the school day and beyond. • Regular exercise is key – the best way to settle nerves is to go for a fast paced walk or a run. Stress/Anxiety is adrenaline with nowhere to go so exercise is an obvious outlet. • Calm space and controlled breathing – mindfulness • Be organised by having a study plan on the wall – little and often is better than trying to cram • Have fun! Go out and do something at the weekend.

  15. If you are really concerned: • Appointment with your GP for medical advice • Contact Mr Matthews or Ms Delaunay • dmatthews@wrotham.kent.sch.uk • rdelaunay@wrotham.kent.sch.uk • If the GP asks you to follow up with the school’s counsellor remember that there is a waiting list. Ask your GP to pursue help from outside agencies.

  16. School support • Time to Change – support young people to talk openly about mental health • Professional outside agencies including Addaction running an early intervention programme with 20 students • Psychotherapist offering 1:1 and group therapy sessions – waiting list. • Opportunity for private counselling at subsidised rates • Year 11 Mindfulness sessions start this week – Tuesday lunchtimes • Mr Matthews – Progress Leader for year 11 • Ms Delaunay – Multi-agency Coordinator and drop-in counselling support for years 10 & 11
