  1. Green Building Products Summit 4.0 June 24, 2011 International Green Construction Code

  2. The Code of Hammurabi King Hammurabi of Babylon ca. 1790 B.C. “If a builder builds a house for someone, and does not construct it properly, and the house which he built falls in and kills its owner, then the builder shall be put to death.” History of Codes

  3. History of Codes

  4. Why is a Green Code Needed?

  5. Intended toreduce the negative impacts of the built environment on the natural environment. • Resource Conservation • Land Use • Reducing Waste • Reducing Pollutants • Focus on Performance and Accountability What do LEED and IGCC have in common?

  6. Energy use efficiency The buildings impact on environment (Greenhouse Gas) Water use efficiency Materials and resource use Indoor environment quality Site design Sustainable building owner/facility management education Existing buildings WASTE COST SAVINGS 50-90% WATER USE SAVINGS 30-50% CARBON SAVINGS 35% ENERGY SAVINGS 30% IgCC Subject Areas

  7. Code vs Standard vs Rating System LEED IGCC ASHRAE 189.1 Why codify “best practices”?

  8. The push-pull between codes & standards

  9. The push-pull between codes & standards

  10. One of the values of the IgCC is that it is designed to coordinate and integrate with the existing I-Codes. • The IgCC offers various tiers of jurisdiction to apply to commercial and high performance buildings. • In a manner that incorporates the heath and safety features of the other I-Codes. What is an Overlay Code ?

  11. Adoptable…Usable…Enforceable • Works as an overlay to the ICC code family • Minimum & advanced levels of “green” • Performance, prescriptive and outcome-based paths • Accounts for local conditions (flood areas, greenfield sites, light pollution, etc.) • Designed with local, state & federal law in mind IgCC Development Concepts

  12. Chapter 1: Administration • Chapter 2: Definitions • Chapter 3: Jurisdictional Requirements & Project Electives • Chapter 4: Site Development & Land Use • Chapter 5: Material Resource Conservation & Efficiency • Chapter 6: Energy Conservation, Efficiency & Atmospheric Quality • Chapter 7: Water Resource Conservation & Efficiency • Chapter 8: Indoor Environmental Quality & Comfort • Chapter 9: Commissioning, Operation & Maintenance • Chapter 10: Existing Buildings • Chapter 11: Existing Building Site Development • Appendix A: Optional Ordinance • Appendix B: Greenhouse Gas Reductions In Existing Buildings • Appendix C: Sustainability Measures Content

  13. CHAPTER 3 • FLEXIBILITY • allows adopting jurisdiction to define priorities • Jurisdictional Requirements • Project Electives A Few Highlights – Project Electives

  14. CHAPTER 5 • MATERIAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION & EFFICIENCY • Material Selection Criteria • Service Life • Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment A Few Highlights – Materials

  15. CHAPTER 6 • ENERGY CONSERVATION AND EFFICIENCY • ZEPI • Metering, Monitoring, Reporting • Building Envelope Performance A Few Highlights – Energy

  16. CHAPTER 9 • COMMISSIONING and O & M • Commissioning Plan • Ends at Certificate of Occupancy • Owner Education A Few Highlights – Commissioning

  17. ICC Development Schedule Code Development Hearing May 2011 Public Comment June-Aug 2011 Final Action Hearing Nov 2011 Publication March 2012 Adoption in Pennsylvania Will require legislation Statewide or Local Adoption? Possible tool for incentive programs Adoption Process - IgCC

  18. Will provide a new regulatory framework • Will apply to traditional commercial and high performance buildings • Consistent and coordinated with the ICC family of Codes & Standards • Residential portions of buildings, except institutional, shall be covered by ICC-700 (NGBS) • Designed with leading recognized rating systems in mind Why IgCC is Important to the Community

  19. Additional Resources • ICC Website • www.iccsafe.org/cs/igcc • - IGCC Toolkit: http://www.aia.org/igcc • Social Media Outlets • Codes & Standards Community on KnowledgeNet (via http://network.aia.org) • Codes & Standards Group on LinkedIn • Codes & Standards on Twitter: @AIACodes THANK YOU……… Questions?????
