  1. LARP QXF Conductor Plan Arup K Ghosh Lab Coordination Meeting March 21, 2013

  2. Current LARP activities • Procurement of RRP-108/127 Ti-Ternary Strand • Validating billet design from OST that improves RRR • Evaluation of recent 400 kg delivery from OST • QXF Cable Development • Defining initial cable parameters • Validating cable design • Fabrication and qualification of QXF cable for 1.5 m short model magnets • Strand Testing • HQ coil reaction witness sample tests • QXF cable validation tests • Production planning • Schedules, cost estimates, Lab roles

  3. Strand Procurement Timeline • Conductor procurement from BNL and LBNL • Sufficient conductor “in-house” for 6 short model QXF coils • For the 4.25 m QXF coils: Planning for 17 coils : Require ~ 2000 kg • FY 12: 275 kg • FY13: 250 kg • FY14: 600 kg • FY15: 750 kg • FY 16: 200 kg • RRP-169 and 217 re-stack conductor development • CERN is procuring 132/169 • CDP is placing an order for 100 kg of 144/169 – June’14 • Based on recent 217 R&D billet performance, CDP is also planning to fund further R&D billets – Sep’14

  4. Cabling Plans at LBNL • LBNL cabling machine critical for QXF cable • FY’13—’14: Cable for SQXF coils, UL = 150m • FY’13: 2 UL’s using Ta-ternary wire (coil winding 3/2014) • FY’14: 4 UL’s using Ti-Ternary wire • All are cored cables for suppression of eddy current effects • FY’14 –’16: Cable for LQXF coils UL= 525 m • 5 UL’s in FY’14 • 6 UL’s in FY’15 • 6 UL’s in FY’16 • FY’13 and FY’14 • Test new conductor designs (RRP 169, 217 and PIT wire)

  5. Strand Testing Plans • Test stations available at BNL, LBNL and FNAL • Qualification Tests of Production QXF Cable • Extracted and virgin strands reacted as per coil reaction schedule • Plan for 6 sample tests /cabling run • Cable run can be several UL’s • Coil Reaction Witness Sample Tests • 5-6 samples per coil reaction • Measure at two labs (BNL, LBNL) • Validation Tests for cables using new conductor designs • Estimated # of Tests • 100 /year at a minimum, spread over two labs
