  11. Interface and 21st Century Skills Interface meets the challenges of the 21st century with the following approaches: • Inviting students to explore essential questions and big ideas, both independently and in collaboration with others • Integrating the development of 21st century skills and competencies into inquiry-based activities in the context of a wide range of genres dealing with engaging issues and concepts • Providing a balanced literacy program with a focus on high-yield instructional strategies and a variety of active learning experiences, with frequent opportunities to read, write, discuss, and create

  12. Interface and 21st Century Skills • Focusing on selections with real-world themes chosen to engage and motivate students, create meaningful learning experiences, and develop students’ voices and opinions • Offering authentic assessment activities and fostering ownership of assignments by providing a great deal of student choice and involvement • Suggesting differentiated instructional supports based on students’ readiness, interests, and learning preferences • Using purposeful talk to scaffold reading, writing, and media activities and responses • Integrating technology to support and reinforce literacy skills

  13. 21st Century Skills • Problem Solving • Interpersonal • Lifelong Learning • Perspective Taking and Empathy • Advocacy and Argumentation • Leadership • Media and Technology • Creativity

  14. Teaching and Learning Environment • Classroom activity is learner-centred rather than teacher-centred, and interactive rather than didactic • The teacher’s role is as a collaborator rather than fact teller, and sometimes a learner rather than always an expert • The student’s role is as a collaborator rather than always a listener, and sometimes an expert versus always a learner • Instructional emphasis is on relationships, inquiry, and innovation rather than facts and memorization

  15. Teaching and Learning Environment • Concept of knowledge is based on the transformation of facts rather than the accumulation of facts • Demonstrates the quality of understanding rather than quantity of understanding • Success assessment based on criterion-referenced portfolios and performances and metacognitive tasks rather than short-response testing of piecemeal facts • Technology is used for communication, collaboration, inquiry, and access to varying sources of information and a range of formats rather than drill and practice

  16. Just How Relevant is Interface? • In a recent graduate course at OISE – New Literacies: Making Multiple Meanings –students examined a range of ten “New Literacies” and determined the skills students need to realize them. • Critical Literacy • Ecological Literacy • Multimedia Literacy • Health Literacy • Transliteracy • Computer Literacy • Cultural Literacy • Media Literacy • ICT Literacies • Information Literacy

  17. Just How Relevant is Interface? They identified a set of five essential skills…Essentially, what they identified were the 21st century skills that Interface develops in each of its four books. • Critical Thinking • Metacognition • Self Awareness • Navigation Skills • Empathy

  18. What Interface Offers Research tells us that knowledge is constructed. Learning is a process of creating personal meaning from new information and prior knowledge. Interface offers: • Discussion of new ideas • Divergent thinking, multiple links and solutions, not just one right answer • Critical thinking skills: analyzing, comparing, generalizing, predicting, hypothesizing • Connecting new information to personal experience, prior knowledge • Applying information to new situations

  19. What Interface Offers Research tells us there is great variety in learning styles, attention spans, memory, developmental paces, and intelligences. Interface offers: • Choices in tasks • Choices in how to show mastery/competence • Time to think about and do engaging tasks • Opportunities for reflection • Recognition of, and respect for, multiple ways of doing things

  20. What Interface Offers Research tells us that people perform better when they known the expectations, see models, and know how their performance compares to the standard. Interface offers: • Opportunities for self- and peer-assessment • Criteria for judging performance • Focus on improvement • Clearly defined performance standards
