  6. Why are we briefing you? Deployments can be very stressful for the deploying member and their families potential for high stress or traumatic experiences while deployed, intense emotions, separation from family, family must adjust to absence of deployed member, etc.Sometimes reintegrating back into our lives and families can be more difficult than we expectPrevention – an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure Knowledge – providing you with information to assess your progress and those of your fellow airmen during reintegration

  7. Stress and Trauma Stress – a nonspecific response of the body to any demand made upon it (can be positive or negative) Trauma - overload of the nervous system, resulting in poorly encoded memories and emotionsThe more stress you feel, the more susceptible you are to experiencing trauma. Trauma can be caused by real or perceived threat of death or serious injury to yourself or others.

  8. Stress and trauma as it relates to deployment 1. What was the immediate effect of this stress or trauma on you?(increased anxiety, difficulty with relationships, etc.) 2. What was the prolonged effect?(poor sleep, energy, appetite, etc.)3. How might it affect your transition back to the non-deployed setting?(difficulty resuming role in family, work-related problems, continued difficulty with sleep, energy, concentration, appetite, etc.)

  9. War-zone Stress Reaction • Re-experiencing Trauma: • Intrusive recollections • Recurrent nightmares • Feeling as if trauma was reoccurring • Avoidance/phobic reaction • Sense of a foreshortened future • Emotional numbing • 2.
