  2. The Civil Rights Movement • 1. How would you feel if you were not able to eat at a restaurant because of the color of your skin? • 2. Discrimination- unfair treatment based on prejudice • 3. Segregation- the separation of white society and African American society in public places • 4. “Jim Crow” laws- name for segregation laws • Ex: Poll Tax

  3. Brown v. Board of Education • 5. Civil Rights- rights to full citizenship and equality under law • 6. Plessy v. Ferguson- Supreme court case that stated “separate but equal” was ok • 7. Brown v. Board of Education- (1954)- called for integration of schools and overturned Plessy v. Ferguson decision • Video

  4. Civil Rights Movement • 8. Montgomery Bus Boycott- African Americans refused to ride buses until segregation on buses was outlawed • Rosa Parks sparked the boycott • 9. Nonviolent Protest- peaceful protest against laws believed to be unfair • Martin Luther King preached about this idea • 10. Sit-ins- sitting at all lunch counters for all whites and refusing to leave until they were served. • 11. “Freedom Rides”- volunteers rode in the deep south on buses to test the integration laws • 12. Civil Rights Act of 1964- banned segregation in stores, restaurants, hotels, and theaters

Hate crimes- violent acts against people because of a group they belong to • Racial Profiling • 15. Affirmative Action- policy meant to increase the number of minorities and women at work and college • 16. Native Americans also suffered injustice • Native American Indian Movement • 17. Chicano Movement- formed by Mexican Americans to fight segregation against this group in the southwest • Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta • 18. National Organization for Women- formed to help women’s rights movement • 19. ERA- Equal Rights Amendment-didn’t pass • 20. Disabilities Act- protects the rights of disabled person s in the workplace and other public places
