  7. CRITICISM OF THE NEW DEAL • SUCCESS? OR • FAILURE? • Supreme Court thought FDR was gaining too much power • monarchy • UP AGAINST THE SUPREME COURT • NRA • AAA

  8. A SECOND NEW DEAL • MORE AGGRESSIVE • MORE SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMS • STRICTER CONTROLS ON BUSINESS • STRONGER SUPPORT FOR UNIONS • HIGHER TAXES ON THE RICH. • MORE ALPHABET SOUP: NEW AGENCIES TO ATTACK POVERTY AND CREATE JOBS AND HELP FARMERS.

  10. IS EVERYBODY HAPPY NOW? • NO: • WHILE THE NEW DEAL HELPED SOME PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR MISERY, IT DID NOT END THE DEPRESSION • MANY PEOPLE CRITICISED ROOSEVELT AND HIS PROGRAMS

  11. IT’S UNFAIR: • WOMEN • MINORITIES • JOBS STILL FAVORED WHITE MALES • NO PROTECTION FOR DOMESTIC SERVICE • PROGRAMS TENDED TO REINFORCE RACISM ESPECIALLY IN THE SEGREGATED SOUTH.

  12. POLITICAL RIGHT • THE WEALTHY • PROGRAMS ARE SOCIALISTIC • FEAR OF GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE IN LIVES WITH THINGS LIKE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS

  14. LASTING EFFECTS OF THE NEW DEAL: TODAY • PRESIDENCY • MORE ACTIVE ROLE • SOLVES PROBLEMS • MAKES PROGRAMS • LABOR UNIONS • NEW DEAL CHANGES RELATIONS BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AND UNION FOREVER.

  15. CULTURE: TODAY THANKS TO THE NEW DEAL PROGRAMS • SUPPORTS THE ARTS THROUGH PUBLIC PROGRAMS • GREAT WORKS OF LITERATURE PRODUCED: GRAPES OF WRATH, GONE WITH THE WIND, ETC. • ENTERTAINMENT: RADIO & MOVIES
