PTP and Our Partner Hospitals

The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation's Pediatric Trauma Program aims to reduce the number of children who are killed or injured by trauma through education, training, and partnerships with hospitals. Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among children, and this program works towards prevention and providing immediate care through trained professionals in pediatric emergency medicine. Join us in this mission to save children's lives.

  1. PTP and Our Partner Hospitals

  2. Pediatric Trauma . . . . . . Our Major Focus

  3. Its Beginning . . . Recognizing the serious need for education and training in the areas of pediatric trauma and injury prevention, the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation established the Pediatric Trauma Program in 1994.

  4. Our Mission . . . "To develop local projects, which will reduce the number of children in our district who are killed or injured by trauma."

  5. Why Pediatric Trauma?

  6. Why PTP? • Unintentional injury remains the #1 killer of children age 14 and under in the U.S. • Unintentional injury kills more kids every year than any other cause – including disease, homicide and suicide!

  7. Why PTP? • These injuries cost society $157 billion1 annually! • 90% of these injuries could be prevented! 1 Includes direct medical costs, future earnings lost and lost quality of life

  8. The Partner Hospital Program The Foundation’s partnership with six children’s hospitals connects the Kiwanis family to the issue of Pediatric Trauma

  9. Working Together . . . • Providing First Responder Training • APLS, PEPP, PALS, ENPC and BTLS Photo Courtesy of Kapi´olani Medical Center

  10. Working Together . . . Purchasing Pediatric Medical Equipment

  11. Working Together . . . Expanding Community Outreach Programs

  12. Children’s Hospital Oakland • Child safety seats, specialty seats and bike helmets • Multi-lingual safety booklet • Special Needs Starter Kit, DVD and booklet (booklet available in 2 languages) • Injury Prevention CD Currently available in 7 languages!

  13. Rady Children’s Hospital • Mobile child safety store • Modeled after program at Johns Hopkins • Collaborative effort between Rady Children’s Hospital and EPIC Medics of San Diego County “Prescriptions” issued to parents to be filled at the safety store

  14. Local Clubs Collaborating with a Partner Hospital . . . • The Kiwanis Clubs of Alameda, Berkeley and Oakland sponsor an annual Miracle Mile Of Quarters (MMQ) event to support Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland • Event held in conjunction with a local Art & Wine Festival

  15. Local Clubs Collaborating with a Partner Hospital . . . • The Kiwanis Clubs of “Division 100” annually sponsor a MMQ event and golf tournament • Partnership between “Division 100” clubs and the hospital dates back to 1924!

  16. “But Your Partner Hospitals aren’t located in my Community.” Maybe not, but your community IS being served by a partner hospital . . . • Nearly 2% of admissions to Central California Children’s Hospital were out of the area, including out of state • 4% of admissions to Renown (Reno, NV) were from California • Oakland Children’s Hospital treated children from 56 of the 58 counties in California, as well as 5 children from Hawaii and 804 children from Nevada Fiscal Year 2006-2007 Trauma Admissions

  17. Kiwanis Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship Program “The Kiwanis Doctor”

  18. The Kiwanis Doctor Program A partnership between the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation and Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital

  19. Our Kiwanis Doctors Dr. Andrea Thorp Dr. Tim Young

  20. What is PediatricEmergency Medicine? • Developed in 1992 • 1,446 PEM physicians (as of 2008) • One qualified PEM physician for every 22,000 children visiting the ER!

  21. PEM Physicians . . . • Specialize in the care of acutely ill or injured children and teens • Treat a wide range of medical emergencies that require immediate attention and are often life threatening • Meet the unique medical needs of children, including giving medications and using equipment in specific ways • Diagnose problems in distressed, uncooperative children

  22. Why is This Important? • One third of the approximately 99 million ER visits each year is for a child • Many not receiving appropriate or timely care due to the staff’s lack of pediatric training and experience

  23. Why is This Important? • Immediate access to quality pediatric emergency medical care is critical! • “The Golden Hour” • Babies and children are not “little people” - Their needs are vastly different than an adult’s need

  24. How Does Kiwanis Fit In? The Foundation provides funding to train a physician in Pediatric Emergency Medicine; approximately $100,000 a year!

  25. Then What? • Our Kiwanis Doctor travels throughout the CNH District training other doctors, nurses and first responders • Focus on outlying areas within the District; Yuba City Twentynine Palms

  26. The Result The long-term impact of this training will save countless children whose lives might otherwise be lost.
