  3. a. The Reason for Disbelief: Judgment of God (vv. 37-41) Read Jn 12:37-41. As he does persistently, John never allows his readers to avoid the decision about what to do with Jesus Christ. John also soberly reminds us that many of those who believe in Jesus still allow the pressuresand fears of people to hinder their faith.

  4. ~ Hidden faith may avoid a confrontation with others, but it seldom pleases God. Three ways that we can use the light: 1. Walk in the light –put into action those lessons and commands that God allows you to see. 2. Put your trust in the light –confidently depend on Christ for your present and future.

  5. 3. Become children of light –allow Christ to shine His light through you so that others might see the light. Read Jn 12:37. By and large the people’s response to Christ’s ministry had been that of unbelief. ~ “they were not believing”: there was a constant and progressive unwillingness to accept Jesus with a genuine, living faith. ~ Deut 29:3-4

  6. ~ FAITH IS NOT BORN IN THE ORDINARY HUMAN FACULTIES BUT IS A UNIQUE AND RARE GIFT OF GOD. Read Jn 12:38. What was the reason for this unbelief? John, in this verse, quotes Isa 53:1. ~ D.A. Carson: “This unbelief was not only foreseen by Scripture but on that very account necessitated by Scripture.” ~ This unbelief happened because Scripture prophesied it.

  7. ~ William Hendriksen: “In order that the divine moral order, as decreed from eternity and as described by the prophets, might be fulfilled, the Jewish multitudes, through their own fault, failed to accept Christ by genuine faith.” Here we are once more confronted with the tension between two Scriptural truths: the ordaining/decreeing of God and the responsibility of man.

Why there so few people believe: because men do not reach this by their own efforts, and God does not enlighten everyone indiscriminately, but honors a few people with the grace of His Spirit. ~ John Calvin: “It is not their own acumen but God’s revelation that makes [men] believers.” ~ Let it be made clear that God’s ordaining/decreeing is never set over against human responsibility.

That divine order/decree demands that those who willfully harden themselves shall be hardened. ~ e.g. Pharoah (Ex 8:15, 32); Rom 9:17 ~ God not only foresawit but He had actually plannedto harden Pharaoh’s heart (Ex 7:3) – to harden it inresponse, of course, to the latter’sown hardening (cf. Ex 8:32 and 9:12). ~ Man never sins cheaply.

  10. ~ Nevertheless, the responsibility and the guilt remains entirely on hisside. ~ And as it was with Pharaoh, so it was also with Israel. The Scripture John first cites to prove his point (cf. Rom 10:16) is Isa 53:1. ~ In John’s context:“our report” – the teaching of Jesus; “the arm of the Lord” – the miraculous signs. Back to Jn 12:38, ESV: “so that…” – making this a purpose clause.

  11. ~ It shows that Israel’s rejection of the Christ was not a frustration of God’s plan. ~ Actually, Israel’s hardening served as a means whereby that plan was carried out. ~ IT LED TO CHRIST’S CROSS AND THUS TO HIS CROWN; TO HIS HUMILIATION AND THUS TO HIS EXALTATION.
