  1. Field Leader Training Subcommittee

  2. Who We Are • Chairman: Ross Lampert, Arizona State President, Southwest Region President-elect • Members: • Gavin “Mac” MacAloon, D. W. Steele Chapter President • Bob Slaughter, TEXOMA Region President • Rich Taubinger, Far West Region President • Lee Barnby, California State President

  3. Why Are We Doing This? / • My background • 6 years as chapter president in 2 different states • 3 years as state president • Held other chapter & state positions • NO in-state training on ANY of these jobs • At National Conventions • Some “training” • 2 realizations: • I’m not alone: Association-wide problem • Assumption: USAF leader = effective AFA leader

  4. Why Are We Doing This? • Started advocating for field leader training • 2011 RP/SP Conference conversation w/Sandy Schlitt • Realization: I need hard data! • W/Justin Faiferlick’s support, built & administered 2 field leader surveys • ~75-100 field leaders responded • Topic areas based on those responses

  5. Why Are We Doing This? • Briefed results at 2012 RP/SP Conference • Answers clearly established needs • >90% uncontested chapter elections • Little or no leadership development • Membership & participation named top problems • Don’t know how to improve either one • Scott van Cleef: “We need it, I’d like you to lead it” • 2Q2013 update: • >30% of chapters (66 of 204) inactive • Received NO support payments • 4 regions: >50% inactive (30 of 46 chapters) • 2 regions: >66% inactive (19 of 26)

  6. What We’re Doing • Creating training modules for Field leaders, especially chapter leaders • General topic areas • Member recruiting and retention (Mac) • w/Membership Committee support • Recruiting in draft, retention up next • Base relations; Community Partner relations (Lee) • 2 modules, both in “beta test” in California

  7. What We’re Doing • More topic areas • State & federal non-profit requirements (Bob) • Likely to split into two modules: state & federal • Federal on hold due to turbulence with IRS • Planning and reporting (Ross) • QAR module complete • AAP module in draft • Basic knowledge (web site, OPM, & FOG) (Rich) • In draft

  8. What’s To Come • More topic areas • Leader recruiting and development (Mac) • Marketing & Communications • Social media, newsletters, web sites • Marketing versus “selling” • Fund-raising • Leading a volunteer organization • State & Region officer responsibilities • What do you want training on?

  9. Demo • Completing the QAR • Training section: 23½ minute video • Review section: 20 questions, interactive • Start at AFA web site

  10. What’s Next? • Field the modules that are currently in draft • Start making more • Update existing modules as things change • On-line reporting • Get feedback and adjust/improve • Send feedback to me at afazona@cox.net • Hire a professional narrator? • Transition to BrainShark • None of this will matter without RP & SP leadership!
