  1. Our 8 Planets Mr. Smith

  2. The Sun • Made of mainly gases. • Much larger than any planet in the solar system. • Creates the gravity needed to hold planets in orbit. • The sun is the only star in our solar system. All other stars are in our galaxy outside our main system. • As you look into the night sky, your seeing our galaxy and solar system.

  3. Continued……Sun • The sun is made up of 6 parts; The Corona, Chromospheres, photosphere, Convective zone, radiative zone and the core. • When you look at the sun your seeing the Photosphere. • The Corona is the suns atmosphere • The Convective zone is where the gases circulate • The core is where the gases are burning

  4. Continued……Sun • Will the sun burn out or shrink? • Scientist have found out that the suns energy comes from nuclear fusion. • Fusion is the joining of two atoms to create energy. • The energy created from hydrogen atoms fusing creates helium atoms. It then gets sent into other layers and eventually reaches the surface in the form of light energy.

  5. Sun

  6. Mercury • 1st planet from the sun • Shortest revolution • Rotates retrograde (clock wise) • Much smaller than earth • Its atmosphere is made of • Mercury is a terrestrial planet • Terrestrial means the type of surface • Mercury has little to no atmosphere and manly composed of Oxygen, sodium and helium. • Rotates slow about (173 earth days)

  7. Mercury

  8. Venus- When a volcano meets a tornado! • 2nd planet closest to the sun and the planet before earth. • Terrestrial surface • Most like the Earth • Smaller than earth • Atmosphere made of • 2nd fastest revolution of all planets • Covered by a layer of clouds that trap heat and covered by volcanoes. • Atmosphere made of carbon dioxide(soda’s) • Venus rotates very slowly ( 243 earth days)

  9. Venus

  10. Earth- The 3rd rock from the sun! • Most complex planet with every system- water, air, land and life. • 5th largest in solar system • 23 degree tilt on axis • 70 percent of earth is covered by water • Mostly 0-100 degrees • Atmosphere 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen • 3 layers of surface- Crust, mantle and core • 365 days in year and 24 hours in a day

  11. Earth and moon

  12. Mars • 4th planet from the sun • Sometimes called the Red planet and the Greek name is god of war. • Terrestrial planet • Home of the largest volcano in the solar system called Olympus Mons • Contains water in polar ice caps • 2 moons • Smaller than earth • Less gravity than earth ( because it is smaller) • 4th longest revolution • Rotation is the same as the earth • Atmosphere made of 95 percent carbon dioxide

  13. Mars

  14. Mars and its moons

  15. Jupiter • Largest of the Gas Giants • Jupiter has 4 very large moons called the Galilean Satellites. • Jupiter has a Giant Red Spot made of hot liquid like substance • Greek name is King of the Roman Gods • 5th longest revolution • Very short rotation of 9 hours and 55 minutes • Over 300 times bigger than earth • Has more gravitational pull than any other planet in the solar system • Atmosphere is made of Hydrogen and Helium

  16. Jupiter

  17. Jupiter's moons

  18. Saturn • 6TH planet from the sun • Atmosphere made of hydrogen and helium • It’s a Gas Giant • Has very visible rings that extend out from the planet • Titian is Saturn's biggest moon and is one of the biggest moons of any planet. • It takes Saturn 30 earth years to have 1 revolution around the sun • But its day is only 10 ½ hours. • 95 times bigger than earth • 3 Saturn's can fit into 1 Jupiter

  19. Saturn

  20. Saturn’s Moons

  21. Uranus • Wobbles on its axis • Sits on its side and rotates • Has 11 rings • 14 times larger than earth • Takes 83 years to complete 1 revolution • Atmosphere is made up of hydrogen, helium and methane • Methane Gas gives Uranus its color just like Neptune • Last planet in the solar system

  22. Uranus

  23. Uranus Moon’s

  24. Neptune • 7th planet from the sun • Takes 165 earth years to orbit around the sun 1 time • Atmosphere is made of Hydrogen, Helium and Methane Gases • Methane Gas is what give Neptune its pretty color • Has very light and thin rings (4 rings) • Has a rotation period of 16 hours • Has more gravity than earth because it is larger.

  25. Neptune

  26. Terrestrial planets • Terrestrial planets are known for their rough surfaces and solid structure. • There is little distance between each planet • Terrestrial planets are the smallest of all the planets and the closest planets to the sun • Terrestrial planets atmospheres are made up of Carbon dioxide, oxygen and nitrogen.

  27. Gas Giants • Gas Giants are known for their composition of Gasses that make up the planets. • There is a lot of distance between each planet • Gas Giants are the largest of all planets and they are the last 4 planets from the sun. • They are known for their many moons, rings and brightest colors.
