  2. CONTEXT • Traditions • Meals • Songs

  3. Traditions Why did England celebrate Christmas? Every year in December they celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ. That is why they call this time of year ‘Christmas’ – they celebrate the ‘Mass’, or church servise, for Christ.

  4. Many of them Christmas customs began long before Jesus was born. They came from earlier festivals which had nothing to do with the Christian church. Long time ago people ham mid-winter festivals then the days were shortest and the sunlight weakest.

  5. They believed that their ceremonies would give the sun back its power. The Romans, for example, held the festival of Saturnalia around 25 December. They decorated their homes with evergreens to remind them of Saturn, their harvest god, to return the fallowing spring.

  6. Meals A traditional English and British Christmas dinner includes roast turkey or goose, brussels sprouts, roast potatoes, cranberry sauce, rich nutty stuffing, tiny sausages wrapped in bacon (pigs in a blanket) and lashings of hot gravy.

  7. Song AWAY IN A MANGERAway in a manger, no crib for a bed,the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay,the little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, but little Lord Jesus no crying he makes.I love you, Lord Jesus; look down from the sky,and stay by my side until morning is nigh.Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask you to stayclose by me for ever, and love me, I pray.Bless all the dear children in your tender care, and fit us for heaven, to live with you there.
