  2. What do you need? N • blank 8-1/2 x 11 paper • pencil • straight edge What do you do? • Fold the paper three times in each direction. Make your folds precise and your crease sharp! • Unfold and smooth the paper. The crease lines are your guidelines for drawing the map. • Up is north.

  3. 1 RIVER Down the center of the Promised Land is a deep ditch which is part of the Rift Valley that stretches from Anatolia to East Africa. JordanRiver The ditch slopes from north to south At the bottom of the ditch is a river. • Leave one square blank as you draw the JORDAN RIVER.

  4. 2 NATURALBOUNDARIES Great Sea (Mediterranean Sea) Draw a line to the left of the Jordan as shown. • This is the coastline of the GREAT SEA. Draw a line to the right of the Jordan as shown. • This is the edge of the ARABIAN DESERT. The Jordan, seacoast and desert edge combined to channel most movement north and south rather than east and west. ArabianDesert

  5. 3 Lake Huleh INLAND SEAS Find points on the Jordan River halfway up and down. Kinneret(Sea of Galilee) • Draw a circle where the creases on top intersect. This is the KINNERET. • On the bottom draw an oval two squares tall. This is the SALT SEA. Salt Sea(Sea of the Plain)(Dead Sea) • Between the Sea of Galilee and the fold above draw a small circle. This is LAKE HULEH.

  6. 4 STREAMS(EAST) All four streams flow east to west from the desert edge into the Jordan Valley. Yarmuk • into the Jordan just below the Sea of Galilee. This is the YARMUK. Jabbok • along the center crease. This is the JABBOK. Arnon • into the Dead Sea’s center. This is the ARNON. Zered • into the Dead Sea bottom. This is the ZERED.

  7. +4 STREAMS(WEST) Litani Kishon All four flow into the Great Sea on an angle SE to NW. Please note the crease lines. • The BESOR. Yarkon • The YARKON. • The KISHON. • The LITANI. Note that the Litani flows south from the top edge of the map and then slices due west. Besor

  8. 5 PLAINS AsherPlain Three plains skirted the sea west of the Jordan Sharon Plain • the ASHER plain Jezreel Plain • the SHARON plain • the PHILISTINE plain Philistine Plain The other two plains reached inland • the JEZREEL plain shaped like an arrowhead aimed at the sea Negev • the NEGEV,shaped like a figure-8 on its side

  9. 6 UPLAND HOMELANDS Gal-ilee Israel settled in the western hill country of: Bashan • JUDEA (Judah) • SAMARIA (Ephraim) Samaria Gilead • GALILEE Israel also settled on the higher eastern plateau: Shephelah(lowhills) • BASHAN Judea Mishor • GILEAD Jeshimon(desertwaste) • the MISHOR Judea’s upland was flanked on the west by the Shephelah and on the east by Jeshimon
