  1. The Columbian Exchange A Shrinking World

  2. Columbian Exchange 1492-???? • The Columbian exchange is the term to describe the interactions and consequences of European exploration, also known as the Great Exchange. • The arrival of Columbus in 1492 on the beaches of the Bahamas mark the beginning of the Great Exchange and a new global network. • Columbus and other voyagers were the first large, political expeditions to the Americas. However, some historians believe Europeans knew of the Americas prior to Columbus’s voyages.

  3. What was Exchanged? • Society - Politics • Ecologies - Economics • Geography - Technology • Cultures • Ecology: The study of the interaction of living things (plants, animals, people) with their environment.

  4. Who Exchanged??

  5. European Explorers! • Christopher Columbus: sailed from Spain; Bahamas, Hispaniola; 1492-1502. • Prince Henry: sailed from Portugal; West African coast, Madeira Islands; 1415. • Bartholomeu Dias: sailed from Portugal; Cape of Good Hope on the southernmost tip of South Africa; 1488. • Vasco De Gama: sailed from Portugal; Calicut, India; 1498. • Amerigo Vespucci: Italian that sailed from Spain; South America, Amazon River; 1499; America is derived from his name. • Hernan Cortes: sailed from Spain; Cuba to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, conquered Aztec Empire; 1519-1521.

  6. What is Globalism? Globalism is the increase of human interaction and the interconnectedness of societies across the world. • Human interactions do not just occur with people. Humans interact and alter the environment in which they live in. Ecosystems are constantly being altered by Humans.

  7. What caused European Exploration? • Old trading routes were closed off by Arab empires, and a direct route to China was needed for luxury goods. • New technology in navigation and shipbuilding allowed for further and larger voyages. • Compass • Deep-draft, round-hulled ships.

  8. Major Consequences of the Great Exchange! • New global networks were created and pre-existing networks were expanded. • The creation of the United States, as a result of European Colonialism, illustrates the consequences of the Great Exchange. A new world was created, and a new continent was leading the way.
