(template/example) • ‘Seeing is not believing.’ How true is this about the media? • To what extent does the media control our reality? • ‘Today’s media reflects a superficial society.’ Do you agree? • Advertisements are entertaining, but rarely affect consumer choice. Do you agree? • ‘Advertisements have become unnecessary.’ Discuss. • Is privacy is a thing of the past? • ‘The media today needs to be silenced and sanitized’. Do you agree that there is value in censorship?

PRESENTATION DETAILS • Q1-3: Be ready to present in Term 3 Week 1 • Q 4-5: Presentation in Term 3 W2 • Q 6-7: Presentation in Term 3 W3 • 20minutes per presentation. • Every group member must present a segment. • SLIDES must be saved on thumb drive and BACKED UP on alternative drive/email. • SLIDES must be emailed to me • There will be a general Q&A/comment segment for all presenters

KEY WORD ANALYSIS ANALYSE KEY WORDS • SOCIAL MEDIA: people-to-people media platforms that enable high degrees of interaction (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube) • WEAPON: used to create some kind of CHANGE/DESIRED OUTCOME -- to push an agenda, to evade/protect against pressure from authorities, in a positive or destructive manner • WEAPON OF THE MASSES: a TOOL that can be utilised by citizens, communities and large interest groups. • ‘IS’: Evaluate whether the social media has been used in such a manner and why so.

THEMES & CONTEXT (WHAT’S HAPPENING?) • Push for freedom, and the rise of the individualalongside the empowerment by TECHNOLOGY. • Recent events which showcase the power of the social media in the hands of the masses: London riots, Arab Spring, Iranian revolution 2009, citizen journalists detailing the‘saffron uprising’ in Myanmar, the use of Wikileaksto discredit governments

  9. STAND STAND • The social media is undeniablya weapon of the masses, however • it canbe limited and there are attemptsto control it by the authorities

It IS a weapon of the masses bec… ARGUMENT 1 • The interactive, immediate and highly visual nature of the social media allows rapid communication and coordination. • It is thusreadily used as a weapon of mass mobilisation/protest driving bottom-up reforms • Examples: 2011 Egyptian revolution, WaelGrohim starting Facebook page to mobiliseprotestors, Occupy Wall Street coordinated around the world to protest against unfair financial systems through social media, 2009 Iranian revolution largely credited to Facebook and Twitter

  11. ARGUMENT 1 • Through the very same characteristics of the social media, it has also been used to incite anti-social behaviour • BlackBerry Messenger: 2011 London riots

It IS a weapon of the masses bec… ARGUMENT 2 • It de-privileges information and transfers power from traditional media and authorities to the people: • information vastly more accessible aiding decision making and opinion forming by the masses. • Examples: Leaking of videos on YouTube of abuses occurring in Myanmar during the peaceful protests by monks, Wikileaks, Facebook posts/updates/notes regarding GE 2011

  13. It IS a weapon of the masses bec… ARGUMENT 3 • Not only transfers power, but actively GRANTS individuals a voice which may otherwise be suppressed. Platform used by the masses to critique current policies and create support for causes NOT championed/widely supported by the authorities • Examples: Animal rights, support for alternative lifestyles, discussion of political issues or religion otherwise absent in traditional media.

Yet it is not exclusive to the masses BALANCE 1 • Oppressive governments have similarly utilised the potential of social media to organize and monitor movements. • Examples: Security forces in Sudan have created fake FB pages for “protests” in order to attract would-be activists and arrest them. • China: April 2011 crackdown on artists and many citizens who, as a result of their content posted online, were seen as ‘political dissidents’. • Iran: Ruling in 2009 requiring registration of all social media accounts and blogs.

There exists limits to the efficacy of the social media BALANCE 2 • The technological and cultural environment remains a factor for limiting the power of social media. • Lack of adoption/access, high degree of censorship • Examples: Great Firewall of China and human censors attempt to limit access to search engines • There was in fact a campaign on Facebook to organize against the Mubarak in 2008 but did not take root – allegiance of the army and sentiments on the ground differed AT THE TIME.
