  1. SL2S Meeting May 2009 Gemini Observing Proposals (Victoria) Integral Field Spectroscopy of Gravitationally Lensed Galaxies with Laser Guided Adaptive Optics (LGSAO) PI: Kaushala Bandara CoI: David Crampton, Chien Peng, & Luc Simard

Scientific Rationale • We want to obtain two-dimensional emission line maps of the source galaxy using LGSAO. • Utilize the magnification provided by gravitational lensing + diffraction-limited imaging to study galaxies that are more representative of the high-z population. • Diagnostic emission lines of interest: Hα and [N II] 6584Å. • We want to extract the following information from emission line morphology: • Velocity field and distribution of Hα line widths. Are the source galaxies of interest rotation or pressure supported? • Derive SFR from Hα emission. • What is the metallicity of lensed galaxies (from [N II]/Hα abundance index)? Explore the feasibility of obtaining a two-dimensional metallicity map.

Observing Summary • The targets for LGSAO-assisted IFS observations are a subset of Sloan Lens ACS Survey (SLACS). • Source galaxies in the SLACS Survey are moderate- to high-redshift galaxies with strong emission lines in the optical spectra (ex: Hβ and [O II] 3727Å). • For the source galaxies of interest, Hα and [N II] 6584Å are redshifted to the Near-IR regime. • Instrument: Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrometer (NIFS) + facility adaptive optics system (ALTAIR) in Gemini-North observatory using Laser Guide Star mode.

  6. Observing Summary cont’d… • For 2009B, observe target SDSS J0252+0039 as a pilot/feasibility project. • Total time requested for 2009B is 12.5 hours for one target (!). • There are 9 potential candidates suitable for NIFS + ALTAIR observations (a bright tip-tilt star within 25” radius).

SDSS J0252+0039 a b c F814W image Model Residual Source reconstruction • Background galaxy at z=0.9818 lensed by an early-type foreground galaxy at z=0.2803. • Strong [O II] 3727Å emission in the optical spectrum. • Background galaxy ~27X magnified by the early-type foreground lens. • Lens model produced by LENSFIT (CoI Peng et al. 2006).
