How does the program work? • Registered Program with the Department of Commerce • The Department of Commerce’s Registered Pre-Apprenticeship programs provide a link between classroom skills training and the workplace. These programs help to prepare individuals with the skills required to enter apprenticeable occupations. • Partnership with Johnston Community College • NC's Career and College Promise (CCP) program at JCC is an educational opportunity for qualified North Carolina high school eleventh and twelfth grade students to get ahead of preparing for their career and/or the completion of college credits. • Caterpillar Pre-Apprenticeship Program • The Caterpillar Assembly Pre-Apprenticeship program is a year and a half program that prepares students for employment in a manufacturing environment. Apprentices work at the Caterpillar plant located in Clayton, North Carolina. Building Construction Products

Program Details • The Pre-Apprenticeship Program allows for development of career and technical competencies within the manufacturing career field. • Pre-Apprenticeship allows students to observe and participate in daily operations, develop direct contact with job personnel, ask questions about particular careers, and perform certain job tasks. • Students will receive training in the following area • Caterpillar Production Systems • Machine Operation • Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC): Safety • Human Resources Career Development • Students will work part time at Caterpillar facilities in the role of product assembler • Students paid $10.10 per hour • Paid for time working and for Caterpillar training

Why be a Pre-Apprentice? • Benefits to Students: • You will receive a registered Department of Commerce certificate for completion of the Pre-Apprenticeship Program • You earn credit hours at Johnston Community College at no cost • Approximately 640 hours of on the job training • Paid workexperience while in High School • Potential for part-time or full-time employment at Caterpillar and a great resume builder! Pre-Apprenticeship Program Requirements Eligibility Requirements : • Must be 16 years of age • Must be a High School Junior in good academic standing • Must participate in the Career & College Promise Program • Must have 2 letters of recommendation (from teachers and/or school administration) • Must have support of parents or legal guardian • Must complete the application process • Must participate in an interview • Must be legally authorized to work in the US • Must have transportation Candidates will be chosen based on the following criteria: • Scholastic record • Discipline profile • Attendance profile • Interview Skills • Letters of Recommendation Building Construction Products

  16. How To Apply Step 1:  Students must obtain and complete an “Application for Caterpillar Assembly Pre-Apprentice Program”. Applications will be available to pick up from your Career Development Coordinator or at Caterpillar Parent Night. Step 2:  Students must enroll in the Career and College Promise Program through Johnston Community College. Step 3: Students must apply online with Caterpillar at www.caterpillar.com/careers. Step 4:  Deadline to submit all three applications is October 23 Step 5:  Your Career Development Coordinator or Counselor will notify you if you have been selected for an interview. Caterpillar Parent Night • October 8 @ 6:30 p.m. • Interested students and parents should RSVP to CDC by October 6 • Overview presentation followed by facility tours • Participants will need to wear closed toe shoes to be eligiblefor tours per facility safety guidelines • Caterpillar Assembly Pre-Apprentice Program applications will be distributed at Parent Night • Electronic copies will be sent to CDCs • Applications should be returned to CDCs Building Construction Products
