  1. Respiratory System

  2. Functions • To supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. • Exchange gases. • Respiration is achieved through the mouth, nose, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm. • Carbon dioxide follows the same path out of the lungs when you exhale. • The diaphragm's job is to help pump the carbon dioxide out of the lungs and pull the oxygen into the lungs. • When the diaphragm contracts, oxygen is pulled into the lungs. • When the diaphragm relaxes, carbon dioxide is pumped out of the lungs.

  3. Health Concerns • Emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma attacks • pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism, pulmonary hypertension, and lung cancer • Infectious, environmental and other diseases, pneumonia, tuberculosis, asbestosis, particulate pollutants Coughing • Inability to cough can lead to infection

  4. Interesting Facts • Your lungs contain almost 1500 miles of airways and over 300 million alveoli. • Every minute you breathe in 13 pints of air. • Plants are our partners in breathing. We breathe in air, use the oxygen in it, and release carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Thank goodness! • People tend to get more colds in the winter because we're indoors more often and in close proximity to other people.
