What are the dangers of overcharging?

Exceeding the load weight specified in the vehicle's data sheet may cause the car insurance not to be responsible for damages in the event of an accident.

  1. OVERLOAD: HOW DOES IT AFFECT SAFETY?  Do not forget to enjoy, but do not forget to be cautious and keep in mind the safety of the trip.

  2. Summer is coming and with it the holidays. And this year, after Covid-19, our vacations will be more like those of the 70s, traveling through our country by car and with the whole family.   • Many drivers when planning their vacations do not take into account the weight of the luggage and how it can affect the excess load in the car, putting everything that fits in it. The truth is that excess weight can seriously increase the risk of having a road accident. But how do I know what the load limit is on my car? The limits were sets by auto for trade.  • To begin with, we can consult the technical sheet of the vehicle, since it will tell you what the maximum authorized mass (MMA) is so that you can calculate the luggage. It is important that we do not confuse it with the tare of the vehicle, which refers to the dead weight of the car without cargo or passengers. For information, if you have a class B driving license, you can only drive vehicles up to 3,500 MMA.

  3. What are the dangers of overcharging?  • Here we explain what are the consequences of carrying excess load in the car.   • Increases braking distance: C hen we allow too much load on the drive provoke the system forcibly brakes work. If, despite carrying more weight than allowed, you continue to drive at your usual speed, when you have to brake you will need more distance and time to stop the vehicle, reducing the ability to react to an unforeseen event.  • Decreases stability and balance: E l excess load of packages and objects that carry inside the car can cause many problems if they are not well distributed throughout the vehicle. A very common case is to carry the trunk with overload, which can cause instability in driving and that the security systems do not work properly when they are necessary.  • It consumes and causes greater wear: It is not necessary to suffer an accident to see the disadvantages of carrying excess cargo in a car. Another aspect that is greatly affected by this factor is the durability of the vehicle's parts, which suffer greater wear due to excess weight. This causes them to break down more frequently. We can also say goodbye to efficient driving, because fuel consumption will be higher as more power is needed to counter the load.  • Loss in the effectiveness of electrical safety systems: Today's cars have electrical safety systems, such as the Electronic Stability Control or ESP. The problem derived from the excess load is that the ESP will not be able to control the stability of the car in a curve correctly, since it has been programmed to control that vehicle within certain weight parameters.  • Fines for overweight : Exceeding the load weight in a vehicle can be an administrative violation of the transport regulations, which includes more or less forceful sanctions depending on how much we exceed the load limit. The fines range between € 300 and € 4,000.

  4. How to carry luggage securely?  • If you are going to take a car trip this summer, keep these tips in mind on how you should carry your luggage securely:  • Trunk: All luggage must always be inside the trunk and correctly positioned, without obstructing the driver's vision from the rear.   • Order of placement: The heaviest baggage should be placed first. The largest and most rigid suitcases should be located at the bottom of the trunk, placing the less heavy objects on them. Fasten the rear seat belts, even if no one is riding in them. This will help prevent them from falling over in the event of an accident and that objects from the trunk do not access the front.  • Do not use the rear tray: It is advisable not to place objects on the rear tray, since in the event of sudden braking these objects can pose a risk and hit the occupants.   • Roof Racks and Chests: Installing a roof rack or hood on top of the car is ideal when you don't have enough space in the trunk. Of course, remember that an excess load on the roof of the vehicle can cause more instability, since we raise the center of gravity of the car while reducing power.  • Knowing the data of the maximum weight of the vehicle will help us take into account what luggage we can carry, regardless of what it occupies in space. Overloading reduces vehicle performance and considerably increases the risk of an accident.
