Creating a Project • Your project will be stored on your “My Documents” folder as an .nvp file. • Open QSR (NVivo 7). • Open “New Project” • In the “Title” field, enter a name for your project • Now you may save this project again to a different file if you want it somewhere other than “My Documents.”

Gathering Source Material • Data sources include: hand-written diaries, images, interview transcripts • Importing data: • Types: .txt files, rich text, or Word (.doc) files • Documents may be created directly in NVivo • Create “externals” for audio or video files, hand written diaries, books, newspaper articles, etc. • Create/import memos to record thoughts and observations (e.g. journal or log entries about progress of project)

Gathering Data--details • Importing: • Open “Documents” folder • On “Project” menu—click “Import Documents” • In “Import from” field—click “Browse” • Locate documents you wish to import • Click—”Open” • Select type of “Option” and Click “Ok” • “Update Text Styles” • “Create Descriptions” • “Code Sources at Cases” • “Create as Read-Only”

  9. Importing documents—step 2In “Import from” field—click “Browse”Locate documents you wish to import, click “ok”

  10. Importing documents—step 3Now your document will fill the “Import from” field, select “option” and click “ok”

  11. Importing Documents—step 4You may choose to record a description of this file, click “ok”

Creating Nodes • If you have themes you want to explore in your data, then you are ready to create nodes (codes) • Simple Tree Nodes (general themes and their related sub-themes) • In “Navigation View” click—”Nodes” • Click “Tree Nodes” • Click “New” • Click “Tree Node in this Folder” option • Enter the node name (e.g. ‘communication’ or ‘distancing practices’ or ‘openness’) • Click—”Ok” • To add sub-theme nodes under this node: • Click—the parent node (e.g. ‘communication’ or ‘openness’) • Click—”New” on the Main toolbar • Click—”Tree Node in this Folder” • Enter—name of sub-theme node and description • Click—”Ok”

  16. Creating Nodes—Step 4“New Tree Node” will open, type in name of node, description, click “ok”

  17. Creating Sub Nodes—Step 1Click ‘parent’ node--communication

  18. Subnodes—Step 2Click “new”, then “Tree Node in this Folder”—then name sub node in “Name” field of “New Tree Node” box, add description, click “ok”

Simple Coding • Open the source you want to code in “Detail View.” • Open the required node folder to display the nodes in “List View.” • Select the source content by highlighting it (hold the mouse button to highlight) and drag and drop it in the required node. • Content is now coded at the appropriate node.
