  1. NHAI to Expand Yamuna Expressway Post Functioning of Jewar International Airport The 205 km long Yamuna highway is one of India’s largest and most important 6-lane expressway. Functional since 2012, the Yamuna Expressway connects Greater Noida to Agra. However, with the new Jewar International Airport coming up, the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have decided to expand the Expressway to 8 lanes. Once the Jewar Airport gets operational, the amount of traffic is speculated to be very high, given that the airport will serve as a major transportation point for many people. YEIDA CEO, Mr Arun Vir Singh said that according to recent surveys, experts have estimated the number of commuters after the Jewar Airport opens to be 5 million. For this, an additional lane would be added to each side of the existing 6-lane expressway. According to Government rules, a 4th lane should be added to an expressway if the vehicular movement crosses 60000. Of the 5 million commuters, half are estimated to use their personal vehicles, while the other half would be availing public transport options. The 4th lane will be added once the airport becomes functional. Currently, 33000 vehicles commute from Greater Noida to Jewar, while 20000 travel from Jewar to Agra. The construction of Jewar International Airport is scheduled to begin from October this year, with its first phase estimated to begin functioning from 2022. In the meeting between YEIDA and NHAI, it was also discussed about adding roads to connect NH 93 and NH 2 in Kuberpur, Agra. With the addition of the extra lanes in the Expressway, there will be a smoother flow of traffic, which would be a great relief to the commuters. #YamunaExpressway #JewarInternationalAirport #YEIDA #NHAI
