  11. Implementation Models • subscription – students buy an account on a remotely-hosted portfolio for a resume-builder or a course portfolio; university subscribes for assessment management system • subscription plus installed client on site; same model, but campus gets a local client which can run reports from the remotely-hosted data. • open source download • the code plus company sponsorship/support • the code plus the company plus the community • just the code Separating the code from the services -- unbundled • buy the license and support services – traditional software model University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  15. Cautions • Market shake out • Should enterprise eportfolio be hosted off-campus? • Is open source as sustainable at the application level as at server level? • Demand and expectations ahead of market • No definitions; no standard eportfolio lexicon University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  16. Cautions, 2 • CMS: for length of course • ePort: for life (?) • In theory, then, harder to switch eportfolio than CMS. University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  17. Cautions, 3 • Portability: can keep student files in a university digital repository, but may lose: • comments • association with learning goal • and perhaps permissions • Check for compliance with IMS ePorfolio Specification 1.0 University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  18. Trends • Campuses may eventually have 2 or 3 portfolios for different purposes • Portfolios are being merged with course management systems: • OSP 2.0 (OSP and Sakai) • Angel • Tk20 • and others • Driving the market: • Assessment management systems • Citizen portfolios (workforce development) University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  19. Tips • Tailor eportfolio to your campus: • Small liberal arts: showcase student work; advisement management • State University: assessment management system • Community College: workforce development – use individual portfolio • Professional schools: assessment management system with standards for your field University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  20. Tips, 2 • Include writing, art, music, or architecture faculty – the traditional portfolio fields – on your eportfolio task force • Re-accreditation needs will drive broad implementation, but also do pilot implementation University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  21. Tips, 3 • It will all mean nothing if students aren’t taught how to do “folio thinking” and how to build an eportfolio. • And will succeed if faculty use the production of the eportfolio as the main project in the course University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  22. Tips, 4 And . . . . . • It’s all about student ownership University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  24. Open Source Support Company • http://www.rsmart.com -- rsmart also supports Sakai and is a partner in development of Kuali; this group was formerly with SCT, producers of Banner, and now called SunGard SCT. University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!

  25. ePortfolio Information Sites • http://www.educause.edu/ELI/5524 -- formerly NLII; this is ELI’s eportfolio site • http://www.eportconsortium.org/ -- for eportfolio news – a great site • http://www.ibritt.com/resources/stu_eportfolios.htm -- good place to start for those new to eportfolios University of Rhode Island; EDUCAUSE Live!
