  1. October 9, 2003 Subtitle (Arial 22 to 24) AREMA VIBRATION REQUIREMENTS - UPDATE - Add text to be highlighted here -

  2. AGENDA • Review AREMA Vibration Guidelines • Review Project Scope • Methodology • Progress • Next Steps

  3. AREMA Vibration Guidelines Summary of Test Recommendations Section 11.5.1 • Sinusoidal Vibration Test • Exploratory Sine Sweep (identify resonance) • Mechanical Shock • ex) Class A Sinusoidal • Range / Levels • 5 to 20 Hz: 0.2” peak-peak • 20 to 200 Hz: 4.2 g-peak • 12 Minute Sweeps (0.9 Octave/Minute) • 4 Hours per Axis (20 cycles)

  4. Review Project Scope • Re-evaluate Current Specification. • Current Spec - Accurately characterize environment? • Possible over-test condition. • Goal: Develop scientific basis for vibration test specification. • Ensures durable and reliable products. • Avoids unnecessary design and test cost in new products. • Field Study and Report • Four railroad sites for data acquisition. • Limit scope to Class A. • ALSTOM investment, will share data and results with Committee. • Full Presentation and Recommendation at C38, Spring 2004.

  5. Methodology • LMS Engineering Services contracted by ALSTOM • Leader in the Vibration Industry • State-of-the-art Equipment and Analysis Tools • Experience in Specification Development • Strong Project Management • Statistical Analysis of Environment to identify • Fatigue Damage Spectrum (FDS) (WEAR) • Maximum Response Spectrum (MRS) (OVERSTESS)

  6. Methodology

  7. PROGRESS - Site 1 BNSFData capture completed, Analysis in Progress

  8. Progress & Next Steps

  9. Next Steps • Complete Analysis of BNSF Data LMS Oct/Nov ‘03 • Complete Data Collection CN LMS, ALSTOM Oct ‘03 • Walk-through & Data Collection CP LMS, ALSTOM, CP Nov ‘03 • Identify Site #4Committee 38Oct. 9, 2003 • Walk-through & Data Collection #4 LMS, ALSTOM, RR Dec ‘03 • Complete Data Analysis - all sites LMS Jan ‘04 • Complete Mission Synthesis LMS Feb ‘04 • Present Project to C38 LMS, ALSTOM Mar ‘04
