Fred Kavli и Kavli Foundation • Fred Kavli (born 1927) is a Norwegian and naturalized American physicist, business leader, inventor, and philanthropist. • The Kavli Foundation, based in Oxnard, California, is dedicated to the goals of advancing science for the benefit of humanity and promoting increased public understanding and support for scientists and their work. • Through The Kavli Foundation, Kavli established scientific prizes in the fields of Astrophysics, Nanoscience, and Neuroscience. The Kavli Prizes are presented in cooperation with the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, and have been awarded biennially at a ceremony in Oslo since 2008. Each prize consists of a scroll, gold medal, and $1,000,000 cash. • Kavli Institutes:As of March, 2008, there are 10 institutes in the United States, 2 in China, 1 in the Netherlands, 1 in Norway and 1 in the United Kingdom • Astrophysics (5): Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford University • Kavli Institute for Cosmological Physics at the University of Chicago • Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology • Kavli Institute for Cosmology at the University of Cambridge • Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University in China • Nanoscience (4): Kavli Nanoscience Institute at Caltech • Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science • Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands • Kavli Institute for Bionano Science and Technology at Harvard University • Neuroscience (4): Kavli Institute for Brain Science at Columbia University • Kavli Institute for Brain and Mind at the University of California, San Diego • Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience at the Norwegian Institute of Technology • Kavli Institute for Neuroscience at Yale University • Theoretical physics (2): Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara • Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics China at the Chinese Academy of Sciences • In 2007, Grade I listed Chicheley Hall was placed on the market for sale, with a guide price of £9 million.It was bought by the Royal Society for £6.5 million, funded in part by Fred Kavli. The Royal Society has spent a further £12 million renovating the house, and adapting it to become the Kavli Royal Society International Centre, a venue for science seminars and conferences. Outside of these scientific events the Hall may be used by others for corporate and social events.
