  1. Light and Sound review Study for your test on Friday!

  2. Light • Vocab to know! • Prism- A solid object that refracts light to separate into all of the different colors. • Visible spectrum- All of the colors of light you can see. • Refraction- The bending of light as it passes from one state of matter to another. • States of matter- Solids, liquids, gases

  3. Light • Always travels in a straight line. When these lines are blocked, a shadow is formed. • Can bounce. This is called reflecting. We see objects because light is reflected to our eyes. Smooth, flat surfaces have the best reflections. • We also see color because of light. The color we see is the color being reflected back to our eyes. All other colors of light are being absorbed. White=all colors are reflected Black=all colors are absorbed

  4. Light • White is light’s natural color. • Can bend. This is refractions. Prisms refract white light and separates light into all of the different colors of light we can see. (Visible spectrum) • Raindrops are nature’s prisms that cause rainbows.

  5. Light • Light passes through different objects differently. • Transparent objects, like glass windows, allow all light to pass through. You can see clearly through a transparent object. • Translucent objects, like wax paper, allow some light to pass through and some light is blocked. You can only see blurry images through these. • Opaque objects, like a brick wall, allow some light to pass through and some light is blocked. You can’t see through at all.

  6. Sound • Vocab to know! • Loudness- The amount of sound energy to our ears. • Pitch- how high or low a sound is • Wavelength- The distance from one wave to the next, measures pitch. • Amplitude- The height of the sound wave, measures loudness. • Echo- A reflection of sound.

  7. Sound • Produced by an object’s vibrations. • Has to have a medium(solid, liquid, gas) to travel through. If it doesn’t, there is nothing to vibrate so sound can’t travel. This is why it can’t travel through space. • Sound moves fastest through solids. • When a sound is reflected, it is an echo. If you want less of an echo, you need rough bumpy surfaces.

  8. Sound • Loudness is measured by the amplitude of a sound wave. The greater the amplitude is, the louder the sound will be. To make a sound louder, you add more energy. • Pitch is measured by the wavelength of the sound. The closer the waves are together, the higher the sound will be. If an object vibrates faster, it has a higher pitch. • To change the pitch of the sound, you change the length of the object(harpist) or the thickness of the object. If the object is shorter or thinner, it will have a higher pitch.

  9. Light and Sound! • Both travel in waves. Light travels faster than sound. Light waves travel in a straight line. Sound waves travel out in all directions. • Both types of energy. Light is energy you can see. Sound is energy you can hear. • Both can be reflected off of smooth, flat surfaces. If they hit a bumpy surface, both light and sound waves will go out in all directions.
