  1. S3: Drifting Continents KEY TERMS • Continental Drift : ALFRED WEGENERs hypothesis that the continents slowly move over Earths surface. • Fossil: the remains of a plant or animal that have been preserved in rock. • Pangaea: The supercontinent that existed 300 million years ago.

  2. S3: Drifting Continents KEY TERMS • Continental Drift : ALFRED WEGENERs hypothesis that the continents slowly moved over Earths surface. • Fossil: the remains of a plant or animal that have been preserved in rock. • Pangaea: The supercontinent that existed 300 million years ago

  4. S3: Drifting Continents Big book – pg. 136 Small book – pg. 18

  5. Evidence for Continental Drift I. Wegener used 3 types of evidence support his theory: • Land Features Leave space between each B. Fossils C. Climate

  6. A. Land Features • Thecontinents look liketheycouldfittogether • Themountainsalso line up evenly

  7. B. Fossils 1. Similar fossilswerefoundondifferentcontinents

  8. 2. Evidence of tropical plantsfound in cold places (fossils, coal) C. Climate 1. Evidence of glaciersfound in warm places

  9. Climate 1. Evidence of glaciersfound in warm places • 2. Evidence of tropical plantsfound in coldplaces (fossils, coal)

  10. Wegeners Hypothesis REJECTED • Scientists at the time (1910s) rejected Wegeners hypothesis because he couldn’t explain what was pulling or pushing the continents apart.  • Today, scientists think he was right. 

  11. Due Tuesday • Section 3 Assessment • Big book pg. 140 • Small book pg. 22

  12. Warm Up! • Which 3 types of evidence did Alfred Wegener use to support his hypothesis?

  13. Warm Up! • Which 3 types of evidence did Alfred Wegener use to support his hypothesis? • Evidence of Land Features • Evidence of Fossils • Evidence of Climate Change
